Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren is set to start contract talks with Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink in the next few days.
The 33-year-old has been impressive again this season, scoring four goals in his 12 starts and firing in the winner against Fulham at the Riverside on Sunday.
The Dutch striker is out of contract though next summer and McClaren has admitted that he will have to open talks over a new deal, if his current form continues.
Competition from Yakubu, Mark Viduka and Massimo Maccarone appears to have inspired the former Chelsea and Leeds ace, whose European experience has also proved a big plus in the UEFA Cup.
The Boro boss admitted: "At present he is doing a great job. We will get around to negotiating with players in March, April or May.
"Jimmy was top-scorer last year and you can see from what he has been saying that he is hungry and motivated to succeed and score goals.
"I have always said I would like Jimmy to sign a new contract if he continues like he is."
