Goalkeeping coach returns to Riverside

Stephen Pears has returned to Middlesbrough as goalkeeping coach as part of a reshuffle of the club's backroom staff. Pears, who occupied the same position before former manager Gordon Strachan replaced him with Jim Blyth during the summer, made 424 appearances for Boro and played alongside current boss Tony Mowbray in the promotion successes of 1987 and 1988. Former midfielder Mark Proctor has stepped up from the Academy to become first team coach, while Academy manager Dave Parnaby will take temporary charge of the Under-18s. Pears is credited with bringing the likes of Ross Turnbull, Brad Jones and current number one Jason Steele through the ranks. Mowbray told the club's official website, www.mfc.co.uk: "The proof of the pudding in Stephen's ability is the goalkeepers he has produced. "I'm sure he'll be a big help for Jason Steele and for young Connor Ripley, who was on the bench on Saturday and has been very impressive in training."
