Middlesbrough defender David Wheater has been through a successful operation to repair his damaged knee cartilage.  The 22-year-old, who played through the final weeks of the Barclays Premier League season with the problem in his right knee, had surgery this morning (Thursday).  A club spokesman said: 'This morning's surgery was a complete success and Wheater is expected to be ready to return to pre-season training.' Wheater, a product of the club's Academy, has indicated his desire to stay at Boro despite relegation form the Premier League, although it would be no surprise if potential buyers made a bid during the coming months.   Meanwhile, fellow defender Chris Riggott, who missed the end of the season with an ankle problem, has also had surgery.   The 28-year-old, whose time at the Riverside Stadium has been plagued by injuries, managed only 20 appearances during the campaign.
