Competition is a good thing - Wheater

David Wheater believes competition for places at Middlesbrough can spur Gareth Southgate's men to success next season. The centre-half has seen his pre-season disrupted as he recovers from a cartilage injury with Rhys Williams making an impact in the friendlies against Macclesfield, Dumbarton and Carlisle as Boro kept three clean sheets. Wheater also featured in the latter two games and believes the competition Williams is now providing at the back will keep him and his fellow defenders on their toes. He told the club's official website: "There is competition for places at the back. Look at the way Rhys Williams has come on in the past few weeks. He's a fantastic player, he made his international debut in the summer and I'm really pleased for him. "I know the manager can juggle people around, but as long as I'm in I don't mind. Competition for places, we know has to be a good thing."
