Championship round-up

Newcastle United went back to the top of the Championship as Cardiff City moved into second after West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough both drew. Ipswich Town are still searching for a first league win of the season after drawing at Plymouth Argyle, but Bristol City are up into the top six, along with Queens Park Rangers. Blackpool picked up a point away from home, Peterborough United clambered out of the bottom three and Nottingham Forest drew at Crystal Palace. Kevin Nolan struck a last-minute winner as Newcastle returned to the summit after a battling 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers at St James' Park. Newcastle had to come from behind to claim the points and also had Zurab Khizanishvili sent off after Martin Woods had earlier missed from the penalty spot for Doncaster. Peter Whittingham fired a hat-trick as Cardiff hung on to secure a thrilling 4-3 victory at Sheffield United, who have now failed to win in their last six Championship games. West Brom's disappointing form continued as a 0-0 draw at Midlands rivals Coventry City means Roberto Di Matteo's promotion hopefuls have now won just once in six games. Middlesbrough were denied victory in the first game after Gareth Southgate's sacking as Billy Jones scored a last-minute equaliser to earn Preston North End a 2-2 draw at home. Jonathan Stead's second-half equaliser secured Ipswich a 1-1 draw at fellow strugglers Plymouth, who saw out the closing stages with 10 men after Darcy Blake was sent off. Queens Park Rangers moved up to sixth spot after coming from two goals down to thrash Derby County 4-2 at Pride Park. Nottingham Forest's winning run came to an end at Selhurst Park as the visitors' David McGoldrick struck a second-half equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace. Bristol City stretched their unbeaten record to five games to move into the play-off places after an entertaining 3-2 triumph at Barnsley. Peterborough moved out of the relegation zone as George Boyd scored a goal in each half in a convincing 3-0 win at home to Scunthorpe United. Swansea City have now gone eight games without a defeat after holding high-flying Blackpool to a 0-0 draw at the Liberty Stadium.
