Championship round-up

Coventry maintained their 100 per cent start to the season on Saturday with victory at Barnsley. An early strike from Leon Best and a late effort from Clinton Morrison saw the Sky Blues claim maximum points at Oakwell and send them to the top of the Championship table. Cardiff had led the way after their opening day heroics, but they were held 1-1 at Blackpool second time out. Michael Chopra was on target once again for the Bluebirds, but it was not enough. Shola Ameobi was the hero for Newcastle as he bagged a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Reading. Sheffield United enjoyed a comfortable afternoon's work at Bramall Lane as they eased to a 2-0 victory over Watford. Middlesbrough secured their first maximum points haul of the season as they proved too strong for Swansea at the Liberty Stadium, claiming a 3-0 success. Nottingham Forest endured a frustrating afternoon against West Brom, with a Chris Cohen own goal seeing them slip to a narrow defeat. Heidar Helguson was back among the goals for Queens Park Rangers but his strike was not enough to edge Jim Magilton's men past Plymouth as the Pilgrims grabbed an injury-time equaliser. Scunthorpe and Derby played out a five-goal thriller at Glanford Park, with the hosts prevailing 3-2. Preston North End looked to have edged out Doncaster for long periods of their contest, but Rovers snatched a late leveller to earn a share of the spoils. Peterborough had Craig Mackail-Smith to thank for earning them a point in a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday. Elsewhere, Bristol City broke Crystal Palace hearts with a late winner and Ipswich and Leicester played out a goalless stalemate.
