Boro waiting on bids

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate is optimistic Brett Emerton and Sylvain Distin will move to The Riverside in the near future.

Boro have been quiet in the transfer market so far this summer, but Southgate has now stepped up his efforts to strengthen his squad by making firm offers for Blackburn Rovers midfielder Emerton and Manchester City centre-back Distin.

"We're very close with a couple," he told the club's official website. "Hopefully once we get past the weekend we should have some news.

"We've got bids in and it's just a case of waiting to hear back from the clubs."

Middlesbrough's only major signing of the close season to date is Argentinian full-back Julio Arca, who arrived from Sunderland in a £1.75million deal.
