Middlesbrough have signed Egypt midfielder Mohamed Shawky for a fee of £650,000 from Al-Ahly.
The 25-year-old has signed a three-year contract with Boro, where he joins compatriot Mido among the Riverside squad, having already secured a work permit.
Shawky has won more than 40 caps for his country and was a key member of the squad which was successful in the African Cup of Nations on home soil in 2006.
Meanwhile, Boro boss Gareth Southgate is also running the rule over former Everton and Newcastle United defender Alessandro Pistone.
The 32-year-old Italian is currently on trial at the Riverside, but is a free agent so a deal does not have to be agreed before the transfer window shuts at midnight.
