Boro reject Downing rumour

Middlesbrough have angrily denied reports that Stewart Downing could be sold in the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old England winger has been linked with £10million moves to Tottenham and Everton, but Boro chief executive Keith Lamb has rubbished the reports.

The Middlesbrough-born wideman has made over 150 appearances for the club after progressing through the academy in 2002.

"Stewart is not for sale," Lamb told the Evening Gazette.

"There has been no bid and nor would we encourage one."

Meanwhile, Lamb has also scotched stories that Adam Johnson could be on his way out of the Riverside.

The 20-year-old winger has taken the plaudits following his performances in the last four Premier League games.

Johnson was recalled from a loan spell at Championship side Watford last month and has become a fixture in manager Gareth Southgate's first-team plans.
