Middlesbrough midfielder Kevin Thomson will play no football until mid-October after fracturing his fibula during Saturday's goalless draw at Leicester City.
The 25-year-old Scotland international, who only moved to Teesside from Rangers in the summer, joins Willo Flood in the Riverside Stadium treatment room. Flood has been ruled out for several months after picking up an injury during the opening-day home defeat to Ipswich Town.
Strachan said: "I was hoping Kevin would be all right, but you can tell when someone's seriously hurt. It's bad news for the player and a big loss too for the team because he's been our best passer in the first two league games.
"That's two stretchers in two weeks because we lost Willo Flood long term last week. We've got Rhys Williams missing as well. We've not had much luck with injuries in my time here."
