Boro seal St Ledger deal

Middlesbrough have completed the signing of Sean St Ledger from Preston North End. Boro have been locked in talks with Preston over their star defender since before the transfer window closed at the start of this month. A deal was close to being concluded last week, but they could not finalise the matter before the weekend's games. Now the deal for the 24-year-old has been concluded and St Ledger has signed on loan, with a view to making the deal permanent in January. Boro manager Gareth Southgate said: "I'm really delighted to be able to bring Sean in. He's somebody we think is already a class act. "He reads the game really well, he's got great composure and we think he'll be a good foil for our other centre-halves." Preston were loath to lose St Ledger, who won their Player of the Year award last season, but he is in the last year of his contract at Deepdale and would be free to leave next summer. St Ledger has gone straight into Boro's squad for their game at Sheffield Wednesday and he could make his debut at Hillsborough.
