Doomed Middlesbrough's hopes of avoiding the drop have been hit by the loss of influential captain Emanuel Pogatetz after he was ruled out for the remainder of the season. Boro boss Gareth Southgate had hoped the Austria international would return for Monday's Tyne Tees derby against Newcastle. But Pogatetz has failed to recover from the knee injury which has kept him out for a month. And Southgate said: 'It is a great shame for us but one we have to deal with. Pogatetz looks he need an operation.' Central defender Chris Riggott is also out of Monday's visit to St James' Park but left- back Andrew Taylor is fit.
