Boro confirm Webber talks

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed holding talks with Danny Webber over a move to the Riverside. Webber is available on a free transfer after being released by Sheffield United and has attracted interest from several Championship clubs. Crystal Palace have made an offer for the 27-year-old, but Neil Warnock is expecting the striker to join Boro. And Southgate has now acknowledged he has discussed a deal for Webber, although reports claim Boro will have to offload a member of their current strike-force before concluding any move. "We were made aware of Danny's availability as a free agent and we have held talks with him," Southgate told the Evening Gazette. Meanwhile, Southgate has revealed former Crystal Palace manager Alan Smith has taken up a consultancy role with Boro. Southgate said: "This is a key appointment made by the chairman [Steve Gibson] and I after detailed discussions. "We believe Alan brings with him many qualities that we have not previously possessed. "It's very much a behind-the-scenes role and won't involve Alan being on the training pitch or in the dressing room, but I'm delighted to have him on board to help us push for promotion."
