Birmingham manager Alex McLeish has moved for Celtic's out-of-contract defender Bobo Balde after admitting Middlesbrough's England Under 21 international David Wheater would be too expensive. Even if Boro are relegated this weekend, McLeish says he cannot afford Wheater. He said: 'He's someone we've watched over the last five weeks just in case they say, "Do you want a bargain?". But we think they'll be looking for £8m-£9m, and it would be difficult for us to pay that.' McLeish has scrapped plans to sign Racing Santander midfielder Peter Luccin after he suffered a knee injury.
