Middlesbrough defender Matthew Bates has ended speculation about his future by signing a new three-year contract at the Riverside.
The 22-year-old defender, whose current deal expired this summer, had reportedly been attracting interest from several Premier League clubs since Boro's relegation from the top-flight in May.
However, club manager Gareth Southgate has persuaded the centre-half to remain with the Teesside outfit as they bid to regain their Premier League status at the first attempt.
"We are delighted Matthew has decided to commit his future to Middlesbrough," said chief executive Keith Lamb.
Bates made 18 starts for the club last year, regularly figuring in midfield as well as defence.
