Spalletti issues Zenit rallying call
Zenit St Petersburg head coach Luciano Spalletti has called on his players to put in the "heroic" effort they need to overturn a three-goal deficit and beat FC Twente to reach the Europa League quarter-finals.
The 2008 UEFA Cup winners were clear favourites to progress from the last-16 tie before they were stunned by a 3-0 defeat in Enschede a fortnight ago.
A Luuk de Jong double and a strike from Denny Landzaat gave the Russians a huge mountain to climb, but their Italian coach is convinced his side can go through having performed a similar second-leg comeback against Young Boys Berne in the previous round.
Already 2-1 down after the first leg, Spalletti's men conceded an early goal in the return fixture before going through 4-3 on aggregate thanks to three goals in 35 minutes.
Three strikes will only take Thursday's clash at the Petrovski Stadium to extra-time, but Spalletti thinks that display proves that his team have the strength of character to come back from behind and pull off another upset.
"We were 1-0 after half an hour of the second leg against Young Boys. Then we needed to score three goals and on Thursday the situation will roughly be the same but we have 30 minutes more," the former Roma coach said in Russian newspaper Sport Express.
"On Thursday the guys will play to the limit out of respect for their fans and their city.
"I know that in Russia's history, the country has had many heroes, good, brave, courageous people, and our players have the same qualities."
Twente had goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov to thank for shutting Zenit out during the first leg, and he will have to be at his best to keep out Spalletti's team given that they have a 100% record at home in the competition.
The Eredivisie side have already encountered problems in Russia since they landed on Wednesday afternoon.
They waved their right to train at the Petrovski Stadium due to concerns about the ground's pitch due to the wintry conditions at the ground.
The conditions are unlikely to change much, though, with temperatures expected to plummet to -10 degrees for the game.
Striker Bryan Ruiz, who scored 24 times in the Eredivisie last term, has a muscle problem and has not travelled with the squad while Brazilian defender Douglas is suspended for Michel Preud'homme's side.
Twente survive scare
FC Twente held off a resurgent Zenit St Petersburg in the second leg of their Europa League last 16 tie, advancing 3-2 on aggregate despite suffering a 2-0 defeat in Russia.
A demanding first-half display from the hosts was rewarded with two goals from Roman Shirokov and Alexander Kerzhakov, but Twente composed themselves after the interval and managed to stem the flow of relentless attacks from the home side.
Zenit's players took to the pitch only hours after the news that the wife of their number one goalkeeper, Vyacheslav Malafeev, had died in a car accident.
Malafeev was obviously absent from the starting line-up, but the rest of the team seemed up for the challenge from the first minute, attacking and winning a corner inside 20 seconds.
They continued to control the flow of the match and took a deserved lead in the 17th minute when midfielder Shirokov converted from six yards out to give the Russians a glimmer of hope in the tie.
Their chances of advancing in the competition they won back in 2008 - when it was known as the UEFA Cup - grew as Twente still struggled to get out of their own half, and striker Kerzhakov rifled home to reduce the aggregate deficit to one goal with eight first-half minutes still remaining.
But the visitors showed much more resilience in the second half and even managed to create some openings for themselves, most notably from Theo Janssen.
A string of further attacking opportunities did not really lead to much and Malafeev's goalkeeping replacement, Yuri Zhevnov, was rarely threatened by Twente's strikeforce.
However, it was all about the defensive capabilities of the Dutch side in the closing 10 minutes as Zenit pushed forward and dominated.
But the home side were unable to create a single clear-cut opportunity as Twente's backline, especially the imposing Oguchi Onyewu, stood firm to progress to the quarter finals.
