Match Report

Goals from Kevin Ellison and John Mullin were enough to bring Tranmere a second home victory - 2-1 against Yeovil Town.

Yeovil never gave up the fight and were always in with a chance of snatching an equaliser. But it was a first defeat of the season for the visitors.

Ellison raced forward to net with a left-foot shot from the edge of the box in the 35th minute after being set up by Chris Greenacre.

Yeovil drew level a minute before half time. Chris Cohen found the target from close range at the far post from a cross by Ishmael Welsh.

The Merseysiders regained the advantage on 54 minutes. Mullin beat Steve Mildenhall with an angled effort from 12 yards following good work by Chris Shuker and Robbie Stockdale.

Gavin Ward in the home goal denied Yeovil an equaliser again on 70 minutes when he turned a Wayne Gray effort against a post.

Then in the 84th minute Yeovil sub Matt Harrold wasted a gilt-edged chance when blazing over from close range when set up by Cohen.

Mildenhall produced excellent saves to deny Greenacre on 72 minutes and Stockdale in the 77th minute.

Tranmere came close to a third in injury time with Greenacre hitting the foot of a post from 20 yards.

Yeovil finished with 10 men. Andy Lindegaard was forced off in the closing minutes with a groin injury after all three subs had been used.

Mullin was excellent in central midfield for the winners and there was a five-star show in central defence from Ian Goodison.

Cohen was outstanding in the Yeovil midfield and Welsh and Kevin James also had their moments before giving way during the second half.

Tranmere lost Paul McLaren with a leg injury soon after half-time with the experienced Jason McAteer taking over.

Yeovil employed a 5-4-1 system for much of the time but abandoned it late on as they searched in vain for a point.
