Oldham's ace striker Lee Hughes played himself out of next week's FA Cup tie with Huddersfield Town when he picked up his fifth booking of the season in the goalless draw at Yeovil.

His manager John Sheridan called him stupid. He added: "He is a very silly boy. I warned him before the start about the position, but now he will have to sit out the big game."

The Latics have one of the best away records in the country. This draw means they have only lost three times in 14 trips, including the incredible cup win at Everton.

Sheridan admitted: "This was one of the worst performances since I became manager. The conditions may have had something to do with it, but Yeovil certainly had the better of things until the last 20 minutes when we forced a succession of corners."

Hughes may have earned a villain tag with his yellow card, but twice earlier on he had been a hero. In the ninth minute and again in the 58th he dropped back to help defend corners and cleared two headers off the line, first from Terry Skiverton and then Lloyd Owusu.

Although Lee Hughes helped out his goalkeeper Mark Crossley on those occasions, the veteran keeper broke Yeovil's heart with a series of saves including an incredible double effort on 81 minutes when first Andy Kirk - making his Yeovil debut - and then Zoltan Stieber looked certain to score.

Crossley was eventually beaten four minutes from time but then the post came to his rescue, with a fierce Marcus Stewart drive rebounding to safety.

"If we could have got one goal I think we could have had five," said Town boss Russell Slade. "Mark Crossley was magnificent.

"I knew all about him from our days at Nottingham Forest and even at the age of somewhere around 40 he is still producing displays like this. He was wonderful."
