Match Report

Yeovil closed in on the League Two title and promotion thanks to top-scorer Phil Jevons.

The striker got the only goal – his 28th of the season – on 83 minutes after Aaron Davies' shot was deflected into his path.

He stroked the ball into the empty net to send the 1,598 travelling fans wild.

Jevons' goal came as it looked increasingly like this game, featuring the top two sides in the basement league, was heading towards a stalemate.

The opening 35 minutes saw a cagey midfield battle with neither side testing the goalkeepers.

Southend's leading scorer, Freddy Eastwood, eventually broke the deadlock by firing wide, before Yeovil substitute Marcus Richardson had the ball in the net only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.

Eastwood again failed to find the target and it was Yeovil who came closest to opening the scoring on 34 minutes.

Lee Johnson's upfield ball was crossed on the byline by Richardson, but Southend keeper Darryl Flahavan turned the resulting header from Davies wide.

Flahavan saved the day again three minutes later when he raced out to smother the ball after Johnson capitalised on a Mark Gower mistake to send Richardson clear on goal.

The second half continued to be a dogged affair with both sides creating chances.

Southend saw Eastwood fire wide before sending a tame 25-yard shot straight at Steve Collis, while Che Wilson's header was also held by the custodian.

At the other end of the pitch, Yeovil's Andy Lindegaard and Johnson failed to find the target before Jevons settled proceedings.

The win puts Yeovil one point clear of Scunthorpe while Southend drop to third ahead of Swansea on goal difference.
