Match Report

Colchester leap-frogged Yeovil out of the relegation zone thanks to a narrow and nervous 1-0 win at the Community Stadium.

Jermaine Easter marked his home debut with the only goal of the game in the 54th minute, on what was his second appearance since signing on loan from Plymouth.

It was a well-worked winner. David Perkins curled over a cross from the left and Clive Platt nodded down for livewire Easter to hook home from ten yards out, even though keeper Josh Wagenaar got his hands to the ball.

The U's held on quite comfortably for the remainder of the match to record what was only their second win from ten attempts since they moved to the new ground from Layer Road last summer.

The U's had the better of the first half and Mark Yeates had a couple of early chances.

Firstly, he capped a mazy run with a shot straight at Wagenaar. Then on four minutes he was only inches away with a curling free-kick.

However, the U's confidence was low following a miserable run of results and they rarely threatened the game before half-time, except when Yeates again fired wide on the half hour mark, following Easter's intelligent flick.

Nine minutes into the second half and Easter pounced with what proved to be the only goal of the game. Yeovil huffed and puffed and their best opportunity of snatching an equaliser arrived with three minutes left.

Chris Coyne conceded a free-kick in a dangerous position for a foul on sub Luke Rodgers, but fellow sub Andy Welsh failed to hit the target from just outside the box from this set-piece.

That was Yeovil's last opportunity, so condemning them back to the bottom four, which they had only escaped the previous Saturday with a win over Tranmere.

The one disappointing aspect for Colchester was the poor attendance, which was the lowest at the new ground with a mere 3,214 turning up.
