Match Report

Yeovil sneaked back to the top of League Two thanks to most of their rivals suffering defeats in the promotion race.

It was not such a good outcome for Wycombe as they needed victory to keep alive their hopes of a play-off place.

It was a terrific, all-action game. Wycombe had the better of the early play but the second half belonged to Yeovil. They are the highest scorers in the league, but on this occasion, their finishing was wayward.

They wasted half a dozen opportunities in one- on-one situations and also found Chairboys goalkeeper Frank Talia in superb form.

Steve Claridge, who started his season with Yeovil's rivals Weymouth, wasted two early chances. In the first minute, he had a shot cleared from a corner with goalkeeper Steve Collis out of the penalty area, and on ten minutes he should have scored with a header, but put it wide.

It was Wycombe, however, who drew first blood. In the 23rd minute, Paul Terry conceded a free-kick just outside the box and Clint Easton fired into the top right-hand corner.

It was a lead that was to last only two minutes. Yeovil themselves were awarded a free-kick 35 yards out. The ball was touched to Lee Johnson and the manager's son smashed in a drive that not even Talia could save.

Yeovil have the top scorer in the division in Phil Jevons, but the 27-goal man wasted three second-half opportunities.

Kevin Gall fired into the sidenetting when clear, Kevin Amankwaah brought a great save from the keeper, Darren Way was just wide, and when Efe Sodje managed to get one past Talia, the ball struck Jonny Dixon on the line.

There was almost a sting in the tail when deep into stoppage time, Nathan Tyson got clear for Wycombe, but his close-range header was touched on to a post by Collis.
