Match Report

League leaders Wycombe Wanderers misfired against battling Macclesfield in a hard fought stalemate.

After losing to lowly Bournemouth at the weekend critics will argue that Peter Taylor's men are suffering a case of the mid-season jitters.

They look bereft of ideas going forward though managed to remain steady at the back. Mid-table Macclesfield had the better of the opening stages and should have scored in the 23rd minute when young defender James Jennings horribly missed a free header only eight yards out.

Central defender Richard Walker then saw a powerful close-range header blocked on the line.

Wycombe's best chances came just before the break. In the 45th minute defender Craig Woodman curled a 25-yard free kick inches over the bar then seconds later Chris Zebroski saw a 12-yard drive blocked in the goal mouth by Macclesfield's reliable Paul Morgan.

After the break Macclesfield's midfield man Jamie Tolley saw a 20-yard shot deflected wide and Nat Brown sent an easy header from six yards straight at keeper Scott Shearer.

Macclesfield again went close in the 66th minute when on-loan signing Emile Sinclair sent a dangerous flick across goal only for strike partner Gareth Evans to crash into the post as he tried to get a touch on the slide.

Fellow on-loan striker Tom Elliott nearly made a sensational debut sending his first touch, a powerful eight-yard header, inches wide in the 81st minute.

Zebroski tested Macclesfield keeper Jonny Brain with a late strike arrowing in on the near post that the keeper did well to claw wide.

But Macclesfield were more than a match for the pace setters who looked increasingly out of sorts as the final whistle gave them some relief.
