Match Report

Curtis Weston's stunning late volley rescued a point for Gillingham and denied Peter Taylor a victory on his first return to Priestfield.

Wycombe led through Stuart Lewis' first half own goal and despite dominating for long spells the home side's 10-game unbeaten run at home looked to be over. But six minutes from time Weston found the top corner from 20 yards to ensure the points were shared, the very least the Gills deserved.

Taylor guided Gillingham to promotion eight years ago in his one season in charge and he received a warm welcome from the home fans. The Chairboys boss watched on nervously as his side were pinned back early on, with Weston and Nicky Southall coming close to opening the scoring.

Wycombe, who lost captain David McCracken to a calf injury inside the first 15 minutes, had failed to muster a shot on goal by the time they unexpectedly took the lead on the half hour. An innocuous-looking through ball for Matt Bloomfield sparked confusion between Lewis and goalkeeper Simon Royce, with the latter's attempted clearance ricocheting off the defender and into the net.

It was virtually the last time the league leaders threatened Royce's goal as the Gills went on to dictate, particularly after the break.

Gary Mulligan came on for the anonymous Albert Jarrett at half-time as the home side pushed for an equaliser. But despite controlling the game, they struggled to create any clear-cut chances as Wycombe dug in, marshalled by former Gillingham defender Leon Johnson.

Wanderers looked to be heading for their 14th clean sheet in 23 games, but on 84 minutes their resistance was broken. Substitute Will Antwi, recalled from a loan spell at Northwich Victoria, conceded a free-kick on the right and when Southall's delivery was headed clear, Weston steadied himself to slam home from the edge of the box.
