Wycombe Wanderers produced another impressive display of discipline and resilience to chalk up a third victory of the season against a Chesterfield side who crashed to a second home defeat.

Wycombe's second away success was based on a fourth minute header from Mike Williamson and some sterling defensive and midfield work from a team that has only conceded one goal in four league games.

On the evidence of this well-organised performance, Wycombe will not be easy to beat and they were denied a second goal by a linesman's flag when it was ruled that Gavin Grant had taken the ball over the line.

It did not affect the result and although Chesterfield had long periods of possession and were more threatening in the second half, they created few clear openings.

Wycombe always looked in control after Williamson punished non-existing defending to head in a free kick from Tommy Doherty.

Doherty was outstanding as he snapped into tackles and calmly distributed the ball and he was well supported by a hard-working team that closed down at every opportunity.

Chesterfield also had some quality moments from former Wycombe winger Darren Currie, but their best chance in the first half fell to Jamie Ward, who brought a good save out of Scott Shearer in stoppage time.

Shearer was not so impressive when he came to cut out a cross in the 55th minute, but was left stranded only for Kevin Austin to head wide.

It was a let-off that Wycombe made the most of and they were convinced that they had scored a second 14 minutes from the end.

Grant did well to win the ball near the right touchline before sprinting away to cross for Magno Vieira to sidefoot in, but the linesman ruled he had just taken the ball out of play.

Grant and the 200 plus fans behind the goal did not agree, but Wycombe held on for a victory that shows they will be a force to be reckoned with in League Two.
