Goal!! Richard Walker scores for Bristol Rovers.
It's 3pm on Saturday, May 7th, the match has kicked off.
With 10 players injured or suspended, Rovers were given FA dispensation to make three non-league signings. Best of them was Alex Jeannin, a Frenchman who has been playing left wing back with Exeter City in the Conference. Here he was used in midfield and first came to notice after a quarter-of-an hour when he drilled the ball into the stomach of referee Andy Benn. Play was held up for two tender minutes, and Benn did not appear for the second half, linesman Bob Desmond taking over. The high wind carrying the ball between the keepers on the bounce - as it did more than once - hardly carried hope for a skilful afternoon. But Rovers harnessed it well to go ahead in the 11th minute. Chris Carruthers broke down the left flank to send a cross high into the goal area. Richard Walker buried his header - to justify the extension to his contract. He was ending the season by scoring in eight of the last 11 matches. His goal disrupted the neat approach work John Gorman has brought to Wycombe's game since replacing Tony Adams as manager. They had a chance to equalise when Adrian Caceres got to the by-line, but with next to no room Jonny Dixon flipped the ball over the bar. Wycombe keeper Lance Cronin had to make a hurried save from Jeannin, but with the change of ends Gorman's side then came into the game. Rovers' centre-back John Anderson almost gifted a goal to Dixon, but was then on the line to turn away a certain-looking strike from Matt Bloomfield. Wycombe looked for a penalty when Roger Johnson went tumbling over a challenge from keeper Ryan Clarke. They did not get it and instead Johnson was booked for diving. Late on Rovers came under pressure after central defender Christian Edwards had been stretchered off with a leg injury, but they held out for the three points.
