Match Report

Wigan Athletic can make certain of Premier League survival with a win over Reading this weekend, but the visitors will be desperate to pick up points to avoid the drop themselves.

The Latics are five points clear of the relegation places going into the game, having picked up five points from their last three games, drawing 1-1 at home to Spurs last time out.

Boss Steve Bruce commented: "If we beat Reading then we're safe and we can't ask for anything better than that with three games to play, so it's all to play for."

Bruce is hopeful that strike duo Emile Heskey and Marcus Bent will be cleared to face the Royals, despite the pair limping off last weekend with hamstring and leg problems respectively.

Left-back Erik Edman is Bruce's only major injury absentee, with a serious knee injury meaning the Swede will be sidelined for some months to come.

Latics winger Kevin Kilbane said ahead of the showdown: "We've got people who have been in this position before and we know what it's all about.

"This Saturday is a big opportunity for us, we know that. If we win we're safe. This is a very dramatic time."

Reading's predicament is even more serious than that of their opponents, with Steve Coppell's side just one point clear of the drop zone.

The Royals have lost their last three games, losing 2-0 at Arsenal last time out after falling to a potentially disastrous 2-0 home reverse at the hands of Fulham the previous weekend.

However, Coppell remains upbeat about his side's prospects, telling the club's official website: "Our target is to go for nine points and be genuine in the attempt to get them.

"We have a real desire to make sure we're here next year."

Coppell has a fully-fit squad to choose from and has stated that he may shake things up from week to week to try and engineer and escape from the drop.

A last-minute James Harper goal earned Reading a 2-1 win at home to the Latics earlier this season.
