Match Preview

Tony Adams takes charge of his second match as Portsmouth manager, exactly one week after the shock exit of Harry Redknapp to Tottenham Hotspur.

Adams may not only have to contend with a squad openly unhappy at the quitting of Redknapp, who brought in many of the first-team players himself, but also faces the possibility of a raid on the squad by their former boss.

"If Portsmouth want to sell some of their players, there's an open market. They've got some fantastic players there, absolutely top, top players, they really have," Redknapp said.

A more immediate problem is how Adams will settle into his second managerial post, although the Pompey squad is in no doubt as to the qualities that the former Arsenal defender will bring to the job.

"He will bring in his own ideas and what-have-you but I'm sure that he will be looking forward to getting started," commented striker Peter Crouch.

"(Redknapp leaving) was a shock to us all but obviously it is always best I think when you've got stability and I think someone to come in straight away and probably someone that we know helps a great deal," explained Crouch to Sky Sports News.

Adams has also had plenty of support from his peers, with former boss Arsene Wenger giving his backing and saying Adams 'is ready' for the role.

"It makes me very happy. I believe it is a good opportunity for him and we wish him of course well," Wenger told Sky Sports News.

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill weighed in with his opinion, telling Sky: "He has tried management before at Wycombe and I think he will now be equipped to take the job."

Sol Campbell, Glen Johnson and Glen Little are all being monitored by Adams after recent injury niggles, although captain Campbell is almost certain to be involved despite missing Wednesday's 1-0 defeat at Liverpool.

Wigan travel to Fratton Park looking to bounce back from a dismal run of four straight defeats, which have left them down in the relegation places.

Boss Steve Bruce said after a 2-0 midweek defeat at Fulham: "I'll be glad to see the back of October, that is for sure. It's been a poor month for us, we've lost all four games, so roll on November.

"What we need to do is go back to doing the basics, try and find a formula to win a couple of matches.

Match Report

Emile Heskey grabbed his 100th league goal in stoppage time at Fratton Park as Wigan Athletic ended their run of four successive defeats.

Amr Zaki had given the Latics the lead just before the break before Pompey substitute Niko Kranjcar equalised with eight minutes left.

The result leaves Tony Adams still searching for his first win as Pompey boss.

In the opening exchanges, Antonio Valencia tried an audacious chip from 20 yards but David James was equal to the challenge and tipped the ball superbly over the bar.

Pompey hit back with England striker Peter Crouch rattling the crossbar with an excellent looping header.

Strike partner Jermaine Defoe crossed from the left and Crouch used his 6ft 7in frame to beat the defence but his header hit the woodwork.

Papa Bouba Diop almost broke the deadlock of a dour game with a 20-yard effort, cutting in from the right before firing in a shot that flew just wide of the right-hand post.

Diop was in the thick of the action just before the break - but gave away his second penalty in four days.

He tripped Titus Bramble inside the area and Zaki fired the resulting spot-kick straight down the middle past James for his eighth goal of the campaign.

Crouch should have got Pompey back on level terms seven minutes after the break but made a hash of a simple finish.

Defoe crossed to the lanky striker who could not direct his header and put it wide with the goal at his mercy.

The forward had Pompey's best chance when Chris Kirkland picked up Jason Koumas' back-pass ten yards from goal.

Defoe blasted the free-kick goalwards but it was blocked by one of the 11 Wigan players on the line and went out for a corner.

Crouch and Sylvain Distin then both rattled the crossbar as Pompey desperately tried to grab an equaliser.

Substitute Kranjcar swung over a corner and Distin headed against the bar before Crouch headed it back against the woodwork.

But against the run of play it was England international Heskey that grabbed the late winner as Wigan moved out of the relegation zone.
