Match Preview

Liverpool have bigger things on their minds with a Champions League semi-final against Chelsea on the horizon, but first up they face relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic at Anfield.

A 2-0 midweek win over Middlesbrough lifted the Reds back up to third place in the Premiership, despite Rafa Benitez's side putting on a lacklustre display.

The Spaniard, again linked with Real Madrid this week, warned: "We need one more win before we play Chelsea.

"That will mean we will be able to concentrate fully on the Champions League semi-final matches."

Benitez is still shorn of the services of long-term injury victims Luis Garcia, Harry Kewell and Fabio Aurelio, while his attacking options are further limited by Craig Bellamy's struggles to shake off a knee problem.

In midweek he chose to field Peter Crouch as a lone striker, but Dirk Kuyt may be handed a starting role against the Latics to offer more support.

Wigan's predicament is still precarious at the wrong end of the table, despite a thrilling performance in the 3-3 draw with Tottenham Hotspur last time out.

However, midweek defeats for both Sheffield United and West Ham United mean that Paul Jewell's side are still 15th in the table and just three points clear of the bottom three.

Jewell, though, is likely to be without Lee McCulloch, who suffered a leg injury in the draw with Spurs, even though x-rays showed no break.

Physio Alan Tomlinson told the club's official website: "It's great news, but because of the severity of the bruising, it's impossible to make a clear diagnosis.

"We cannot afford to take risks and will be giving Lee the best treatment."

Luis Antonio Valencia is still suspended and David Unsworth (groin) is a major doubt, while Fitz Hall (knee) and Chris Kirkland (shoulder)
have both been ruled out for the rest of the campaign.

Match Report

Liverpool secured Champions League football for next season with a 2-0 victory that sent Wigan Athletic deeper into the relegation dogfight.

A brace from the impressive Dirk Kuyt was enough to see off the Latics at Anfield.

Rafael Benitez rested his big guns for Wednesday's crunch European semi-final clash with Chelsea, leaving Steven Gerrard, Daniel Agger and Javier Mascherano on the bench.

And the absence of midfield general Gerrard showed in the first ten minutes as the Reds made a tentative start.

The first chance came when the lively Jermaine Pennant played a raking cross-field ball to Mark Gonzalez, who touched on for John Arne Riise to fire a thunderbolt that flashed wide.

The former Birmingham winger then fed Kuyt with a neat through ball before Arjan De Zeeuw made a last-gasp challenge to stop the powerful hitman putting the Reds in front.

But after much possession and little penetration, Liverpool opened the scoring on 30 minutes.

Pennant whipped a cross into the danger area for Dutchman Kuyt, who leaped ahead of Wigan keeper John Filan to bury his header.

Wigan offered little in attack and lone striker Emile Heskey cut an isolated figure up front, but the Latics defended stoutly from the front and restricted Liverpool to just a handful of chances in a quiet first half.

But Paul Jewell's men should have been two down after the break when Kuyt crossed for a sliding Gonzalez, but the Chilean failed to connect properly when it seemed easier to score.

Then Pennant found Kuyt with a deft chip but the Dutch striker chested it down instead of shooting and the chance went begging.

The striker almost made amends on 51 minutes by fizzing a shot at goal that Filan did well to save.

Liverpool were content to stay in second gear, reserving their energies for Chelsea, but they nearly added to their lead when Spanish full-back Alvaro Arbeloa rose to meet a Pennant cross only to head the ball straight at Filan.

It didn't take long for the second though as a mazy run from substitute Craig Bellamy saw him exchange passes with Riise before freeing Kuyt, who turned expertly and arrowed a shot into the bottom corner.

Wigan's best chance fell to Caleb Folan but the striker's powerful header was brilliantly turned away for a corner by Jose Reina.

Kuyt should have bagged his hat-trick at the death but his header fell tamely to Filan.
