Match Preview

Visiting Wigan Athletic will hope to end Hull City's surprise unbeaten start to life in the Premier League when the two sides meet at the KC Stadium.

Phil Brown's Tigers were most pundits' red-hot favourites for relegation in their first season in the top-flight, but after an opening day 2-1 win over Fulham and a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers last weekend, they are currently in the Champions League qualification places.

It's all a far cry from the last time these two sides met in the league 12 years ago.

The spoils were shared in a 1-1 draw in November 1996, but that stalemate came in League Two before both clubs embarked on dramatic upward spirals which have brought them to the top-flight.

This season has been a fairytale so far for Brown, who has no fresh injury worries ahead of the weekend encounter.

Dean Windass and Caleb Folan are hoping for first starts in the Premier League after making Brown's line-up for the midweek Carling Cup defeat against Swansea City.

Veteran midfielder George Boateng is also expected to be fit after shaking off a thigh problem.

However, striker Marlon King will drop out of the starting line-up due to the restrictions placed on his loan move from Wigan earlier in the month.

Meanwhile, the Latics will be hoping to put their first points of the new season on the board at the weekend.

Steve Bruce's side lost 2-1 at West Ham on the opening day of the season, before going down 1-0 at home to Chelsea last weekend.

But after producing a spirited display against the big-spending London club in which Wilson Palacios, Amr Zaki and Olivier Kapo all spurned chances to claim an equaliser, Bruce believes the first win of the new campaign is just around the corner.

"When you analyse it, our goalkeeper didn't have a save to make," he said after the Chelsea defeat.

"That's almost unheard of against Chelsea and they'll go away thinking 'we nicked that one'."

Match Report

Hull City were given a reality check at the KC Stadium as they crashed to a 5-0 home defeat against a formidable Wigan Athletic side.

An own goal from Sam Ricketts and an Antonio Valencia effort saw Athletic 2-0 up at half-time, then two second-half goals from Amr Zaki and one for Emile Heskey completed the rout.

The home side had a great chance to take the lead early on as Dean Marney played a crossfield ball to Geovanni, who neatly slipped the ball through to Craig Fagan in front of goal, but the Tigers winger could only drag his shot wide from the edge of the box.

Wigan took the lead via an own goal on five minutes as Kevin Kilbane swung in a low corner from the right which Hull defender Ricketts attempted to clear, but instead flicked the ball over the shoulder of Boaz Myhill and into the back of his own net.

The visitors then doubled their lead on 13 minutes as Valencia picked up the ball just inside his own half and ran with ease passed the Tigers defence to slot the ball neatly through the legs of Myhill from ten yards.

Ian Ashbee had a chance to reply for Hull just before the break but he miscued his first-time shot from 12 yards.

The home side created a great chance minutes later as Geovanni laid the ball off to Richard Garcia in space, but the Australian international saw his shot from just inside the area well turned over the bar by Chris Kirkland.

Wigan went further into the lead on 63 minutes as Valencia collected the ball on the right byline and played in a low cross towards Zaki, who sent the ball into the bottom corner of the net with a neat right-footed effort.

Five minutes later it was 4-0 to the visitors as Kirkland lofted the ball upfield onto head of Hull defender Wayne Brown, who could only flick the ball back into the path of Heskey, who confidently rounded Myhill and slotted it home.

It was then 5-0 to Steve Bruce's men as Michael Brown played the ball back to Zaki, whose blistering shot from 12 yards was ruled to be over the line by the assistant referee as it crashed against the underside of crossbar and out.
