Martinez rallies rested Latics
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is looking for an energised performance from his team against Fulham this weekend to make up for the flat display they put in at Craven Cottage earlier in the season.
Martinez suggested his players had struggled to cope with the demands of their fixture schedule when a Latics side showing just four changes from a midweek Carling Cup tie against Swansea were beaten 2-0 by Mark Hughes' team in October.
Going into Saturday's game at the DW Stadium, though, Wigan will have had a full week without a match for the first time since Boxing Day.
Several regular starters were rested for last weekend's 3-2 FA Cup victory at Hull as well and Martinez hopes to see the benefits when the team take on Fulham.
"The performance against Fulham away was one of the biggest disappointments we have had this season," Martinez said.
"We didn't perform at our level, we were quite flat and probably the cup competition took too much out of our energy tank.
"We need to look at the game on Saturday as a great opportunity to be ourselves and try to put that performance right with the second encounter."
A player who has certainly had a chance to recharge his batteries is Charles N'Zogbia, who returns to the Latics squad after serving a three-match suspension.
Goalkeeper Chris Kirkland missed the Hull game following the bang to the head he suffered in the previous fixture against Bolton and will have his condition assessed.
In other injury news, James McCarthy has targeted the match against Arsenal on January 22 for his potential return to action.
Franco Di Santo (ankle) and Victor Moses (shoulder) are also doing well.
Meanwhile, Hughes has boldly declared Fulham's slump over as he looks to mastermind a fourth win in five games.
The Cottagers found themselves sucked into a Barclays Premier League relegation dogfight towards the end of 2010 after winning just two of their opening 18 games.
But they have doubled that tally in their last three league matches to climb out of the drop zone and are also through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after thumping Peterborough 6-2 last weekend.
Hughes said: "At the moment, we're getting results and we're pleased with that.
"That's three wins in four games.
"I think we're in good shape.
"We're enjoying our football at the moment, playing some good stuff, scoring goals - thankfully - now and we're getting players back as well.
"We look in better shape than we were just prior to the Christmas period."
Hughes' poor start to life at Craven Cottage piled the pressure on the former Manchester City boss, who had to endure taunts from his own fans following the Boxing Day defeat to West Ham.
He said of the run: "I'd rather go through that at the beginning of the season than the second half when it's the business end.
"You've got to be moving forward at the crucial end of the season.
"You've got to be really strong in the second half and I'm confident that we'll be fine.
"In the second half of the season, my teams are always stronger."
Fulham find themselves just a point outside the bottom three, despite losing only seven of their 21 league games - proof of how damaging draws can be.
"Draws don't really push you up the league, so we're looking for positive three-point wins if we can," said Hughes.
"Because that's what moves you up the league, that's what consolidates your position."
Johnson late show saves Fulham
Andrew Johnson's deflected late strike earned Fulham a 1-1 draw at fellow strugglers Wigan.
The hosts went ahead in the 57th minute through Hugo Rodallega, who neatly guided the ball over goalkeeper David Stockdale.
Substitute Johnson drew things level with four minutes of normal time remaining with a shot that hit Gary Caldwell on its way towards goal, leaving Ali Al Habsi unable to stop it going in.
The result saw Wigan move out of the Barclays Premier League drop zone up to 17th, but they are only a point clear of the bottom three, while Fulham are one point better off in 15th.
In a scrappy opening to the game, Chris Baird had the first attempt on goal after eight minutes, striking a low shot from outside of the area that Al Habsi got down to his left to save comfortably.
Two minutes later, Wigan launched an attack that saw Mohamed Diame cross for Rodallega, but the Colombian sent his effort wide.
Baird tried his luck from even further out on the quarter-hour mark after receiving the ball from his skipper Danny Murphy, but the strike went high and wide.
Damien Duff then drove off target before Clint Dempsey broke into the Latics' box, only to find himself crowded out.
In the 27th minute, Rodallega went close to breaking the deadlock when he headed Ronnie Stam's cross against the post. The rebound fell to Charles N'Zogbia, whose shot cannoned off a Fulham player.
Soon after, Stockdale flapped at a high delivery into the box with Rodallega lurking, but the ball was cleared away.
Duff then found himself through one-on-one with Al Habsi, but he could only place his attempt against the legs of the Oman stopper and Simon Davies' follow-up cleared the crossbar by some distance.
Duff was next to shoot too high and Diame scuffed the ball into Stockdale's arms.
Dempsey unleashed an effort shortly after the restart that went the wrong side of the post, but it was Wigan who started to show more urgency in their play.
Stam lofted one ball over the top that Stockdale claimed before Rodallega could get there. He then repeated the trick, with Rodallega this time able to make contact and hook the ball towards goal.
Stockdale caught that, but it was only a few moments later that Rodallega opened the scoring from a similar position, latching on to Al Habsi's long ball and calmly lifting it over the goalkeeper to put Wigan in front.
At the other end, Dempsey had the opportunity to equalise twice in quick succession but he was denied, firstly by a Diame challenge and then by Al Habsi's save.
Back came the hosts and Rodallega looked set to net a second when he got on the end of N'Zogbia's cross, but he stretched too much to control his effort.
N'Zogbia and Rodallega were soon combining again, the latter unable to apply the finish at the near post due to the efforts of Stockdale.
Fulham boss Mark Hughes brought on Johnson, who soon had a shot blocked by Al Habsi, and the Cottagers then thought they had drawn level as Dempsey rifled in from close range.
The effort was disallowed though, and replays showed the American had handled as he controlled the ball.
Dempsey was looking threatening and he had a scissor-kick diverted wide before providing the assist that led to Fulham's leveller.
His pass found Johnson, whose strike took a deflection off Caldwell, and Al Habsi could not stop the ball bouncing in, despite getting a hand to it.
"Will David Moyes be able to turn it around at Ma..."
