Match Report

Mido finally ended his goal drought to help Tottenham come away with a vital win at White Hart Lane and inflict yet more misery on under fire West Ham boss Alan Pardew.

The Egyptian striker has suffered a barren run of form since completing a permanent move from Roma during the summer.

But he showed he was back to his best when he fired a left-foot volley on the stroke of half-time to make it a week to remember for the north London club.

The same cannot be said for Pardew who must be fearing for his job after seeing his team suffer their seventh consecutive defeat.

Tottenham boss Martin Jol made four changes from the side that came away with an impressive 2-0 victory from Besiktas in the UEFA Cup in midweek.

Despite producing a man of the match display in Istanbul , Bulgaria international Dimitar Berbatov was surprisingly left out of the side as Jol opted to recall Mido to the starting line-up.

England winger Aaron Lennon and Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids were also restored to the side as the Spurs boss looked to freshen things up.

After his side's dreadful run of form, Pardew also decided to ring the changes and handed a debut to Robert Green in the Hammers goal.

Argentinian midfielder Javier Mascherano was brought back into the centre of midfield and Marlon Harewood also earned a recall to the team alongside Bobby Zamora up front.

But it was the home side who came close to breaking the deadlock on just eight minutes when Jermain Defoe's throughball picked out Lennon.

The youngster used his pace to burst past Anton Ferdinand, but fired his shot just wide of the post.

Lennon was involved in the heart of the action once again on 21 minutes when he raced to the byline and cut the ball back for Defoe.

The England striker's close-range shot was superbly saved by the outstretched foot of Green.

West Ham battled their way back into the game and Harewood forced a fine save from Paul Robinson on 24 minutes.

Nigel Reo-Coker's ball picked out the Hammers forward whose powerful shot was beaten away by Robinson diving to his right.

Things threatened to get out of hand on 41 minutes following a clash between Defoe and Mascherano.

Defoe reacted angrily to a late challenge by the Argentina international which sparked a furious bust-up between both sets of players.

Referee Steve Bennett acted quickly to break up the melee and booked both players for their actions.

The deadlock was eventually broken two minutes into stoppage-time at the end of the first half when Mido opened his account for the season.

Davids picked out the Egyptian striker, who cleverly lifted the ball and fired a left-foot volley which went in off the far post.

Lennon could have made it two for Tottenham on 54 minutes but his low shot was beaten away by Green.

And Green had to be at his best once again to deny Defoe on 75 minutes.

Mido came close to adding his second of the game on 84 minutes when his looping header came back off the crossbar.

But Tottenham held on to gain revenge for their defeat against West Ham on the final day of last season which prevented them from playing in the Champions League.
