Martins has pace to burn and he shows it here as he looks to stretch the defence and he almost manages to find room for a shot but Noble gets back well to deny him.
An attacking change from Alan Curbishley as Freddie Ljungberg replaces Hayden Mullins in midfield.
But here is a chance as Bowyer meets McCartney's cross at the back post but he can't get enough power or direction on what was a difficult ooportunity to beat Harper.
West Ham have not looked quite as lively in this second period so far and Newcastle are certainly enjoying the better of it at the moment.
Mark Noble is not happy as he thinks Butt has gone in with his studs showing on him but the referee has decided there was nothing malicious in it and it does appear on the replay that both players just went in in committed fashion.
Mark Viduka is in the mood to be unplayable and he just can't be knocked off the ball as he beats at least five players before finding Butt on the edge of the box whose shot is struck well but Green holds.
Rozehnal with a snap shot from all of 35yards with his weaker left foot that skids narrowly wide of Green's post although he always seemed comfortable it was going wide.
Another rash tackle from Carlton Cole this time as he almost lashes out really at N'Zogbia
Now Owen has been forced off and it can only be hoped it isn't that groin problem but Obafemi Martins is on, so it will be no easier for the Hammers back four.
Worrying signs for all concerned as Owen has started signalling to the bench that he is having a few problems and Martins is being readied.
Hayden Mullins has had a couple of chances and now he is booked for bringing down Viduka from behind near halfway.
Michael Owen with more good footwork beats three before being brought down to win a free-kick in a dangerous position that N'Zogbia wastes.
The second period is underway and if it is as exciting as that opening half then we have another fine 45 minutes in prospect.
What a first half! Newcastle lead although they have arguably been second best in periods and West Ham will certainly believe they can still take the three points or at least a share of the spoils. 2-1 Newcastle at Half Time.
Alan Smith - unvelievably - is already on four bookings this season and he almos picks up a suspension for dissent as he vents his fury at the officials.
Viduka again on the corner of the box turns and hits a speculative shot left footed that Green is forced to tip wide of the post but somehow the referee has failed to give a corner despite his linesman's advice.
Newcastle come again through Viduka who runs at the defence with Owen and Milner either side but he can't find a gap to feed either in and eventually West Ham get back to tackle him.
Rozehnal just hoofs the ball forward but sheer pace gets N'Zogbia in behind Bowyer and he then beats Neill as well and flashes the cross towards Viduka who gets enough on it to bundle it over the line. 2-1 Newcastle against the run of play.
Owen bends his run brilliantly to stay onside and then tries to chip the ball towards the six-yard box for Viduka but this time Anton Ferdinand does enough to stop him getting proper purchase on the header.
Another well organised move from West Ham as Etherington plays a one-two with Noble and then Ashton before trying it again with Cole who slips at the vital moment but West Ham look very dangerous.
The Hammers thoroughly deserved that goal as they have been the better side and Big Sam will be worried with how easily Cole and Ashton are dominating in the air.
Cole and Ashton are winning everything at the moment and they do once more as Cole nods it onto Ashton who volleys neatly into the bottom corner giving Harper no chance. 1-1.
Now though the ball is lofted in and more problems in the Toon defence as the ball eventually drops for Cole in the six-yard box but Harper is again out smartly to block the shot.
Noble has come alive in the last few minutes and he feeds a superb pass down the line for Cole who tries to find Bowyer and Ashton in the middle but only finds Cacapa.
Finally Harper is tested as Noble bursts from midfield and fires the ball goalwards from the edge of the box and the keeper is forced to make a good save down low to his right.
There is good news for Newcastle and England fans because Michael Owen seems - as Allardyce suggested - to be having no problems with a troublesome groin problem and looks very sharp this afternoon.
Rozehnal and Cacapa are having all sorts of problems with Ashton and Cole and Ashton is almost in on Harper again but the in-form keeper is out quickly to smother the ball.
Smith - clearly riled and wound up - charges into McCartney and wins the ball and now he is away down the line but he only has Viduka to aim for and Ferdinand and Upson split the Australian and clear easily in the end.
Alan Smith is not happy with Mike Riley having been on the end of a number of late crunching tackles already and the latest from Hayden Mullins was not a pretty one to say the least.
Cole and Ashton are causing problems in the air and Cole this time feeds Ashton and only a sliding block from Cacapa stops him testing Harper.
The playing surface is in great condition as ever and has plenty of skip and zip in it which is making for quick one-touch passing.

Newcastle welcome back Mark Viduka from injury in place of Shola Ameobi, in one of two changes from the defeat at Derby on Monday. Steven Taylor is also dropped to the bench as Habib Beye replaces him at right back - however Michael Owen is fit.
It is a bit of an old boys reunion at St. James' Park this afternoon as West Ham boast five former Newcastle players, however injuries mean just Lee Bowyer will feature.
Mark Viduka helped sink West Ham with a double salvo on an afternoon that once again saw Michael Owen go off injured amid fears that he requires a hernia operation. Viduka struck twice in the first half from Charles N'Zogbia crosses and N'Zogbia then rounded off the scoring after the impressive Dean Ashton had earlier levelled it up for the Hammers. But perhaps the day's proceedings were put into perspective with a minute's applause just before the game from fans and players in memory of 15-year-old Academy player Jordan Thompson, who died last week after a long illness. After an early shock, Newcastle stormed in front in the second minute with Viduka's first goal at St. James' Park. Yet it was the Hammers could have already been ahead when a poor Steve Harper clearance dropped to United old boy Lee Bowyer, who had a shot blocked and Carlton Cole put the rebound over. Newcastle burst straight upfield and went in front. N'Zogbia worked a one-two with James Milner and crossed for Viduka to lose Anton Ferdinand and power a header beyond Robert Green. West Ham worked their way back into contention and Mark Noble cutting in from the left brought an excellent save from Harper. The visitors severely tested United's lack of height in defence with high balls and it paid dividends after 32 minutes. A long Lucas Neill throw was won by Ashton and was headed back to him from Cole and the Hammers' number nine volleyed into the net from six yards. Ashton's equaliser lasted just nine minutes before the N'Zogbia-Viduka combination doubled up again to restore the home side's lead. N'Zogbia outpaced Bowyer down the left and whipped in a back-post cross that the alert Viduka bundled over the line. West Ham had both Hayden Mullins and Cole booked in a five-minute spell early in the second half, while sandwiched in between Owen limped off injured again, with what appeared a recurrence of his troublesome groin injury adding to the fears that he requires a hernia operation. David Rozehnal flashed a 25-yarder just wide of Green's far post and then Viduka showed excellent skills to tee up the magnificent Nicky Butt, whose shot was well saved. At the other end Noble brought another good save from Harper before Allardyce made a timely substitution after 73 minutes with Jose Enrique going on for Viduka. Enrique slipped in at left-back, allowing N'Zogbia to move into midfield and Alan Smith to join substitute Obafemi Martins up front. And within three minutes it was a switch that worked a treat as N'Zogbia played in Martins on the left and was on hand to bundle in his cross to take the Frenchman to three goals, level with Viduka. By then West Ham were a spent force and should have leaked a fourth when Martins broke clear to round Green, but fired into the sidenetting.
