Match Preview

Third-placed Hull City will be looking to continue their stunning start to the Premier League campaign this Sunday when they host West Ham United.

The Hammers will equally be looking for the three points that would take them into the European places, leapfrogging the Tigers in the process.

After going unbeaten in four games, while winning three, City boss Phil Brown could be forgiven for cursing the timing of the international break, but the Premier League Manager of the Month for September has played down its effect.

"There is always a risk a player can get injured while being away playing in World Cup qualifiers, but there is also a risk of players getting injured during the two weeks of training here in Hull," Brown told the Hull Daily Mail.

"What is good is that the game is on Sunday rather than Saturday. It gives me two days to work with the players who have been away with their countries on Friday and Saturday to get them ready."

The 49-year-old has been busy finalising a permanent deal for on-loan defender Kamil Zayatte over the international break, securing the Young Boys' starlet for a club-record fee.

Ironically the possible return of Anthony Gardner from a calf strain could see Zayatte demoted to the Hull bench this weekend, although under the Guinea international's watch the club has conceded just four goals in four games.

The Tigers also have Nick Barmby and Stelios Giannakopoulos back in training after spells out, although neither are likely to come straight into the side.

West Ham could call upon new signing Diego Tristan after the Spaniard signed for a free transfer earlier this week.

The former Deportivo La Coruna star may have trouble displacing the resurgent Carlton Cole in attack, while David Di Michele and Craig Bellamy have been performing well alongside the former Chelsea man.

Yet Tristan is eager to show what he can do after manager Gianfranco Zola snapped him up following a two-week trial.

Match Report

Hull City continued to defy the odds as they battled to another victory to complete their fourth win over London clubs this season with a 1-0 win over West Ham United at the KC Stadium.

The only goal of the match came on 51 minutes through Michael Turner to seal a man-of-the-match performance.

Hull created a chance early on when Paul McShane floated in a right-footed cross, but Daniel Cousin couldn't get enough power on his header as his effort from five yards was comfortably saved by Robert Green.

Carlton Cole then missed a great opportunity for the visitors when Craig Bellamy raced down the left and played in a neat ball into the feet of the striker, but the ex-Chelsea man could only place the ball straight into the arms of keeper Boaz Myhill.

Hull created a chance midway through the half when Marlon King swung in a cross from the left which Dean Marney met with a thumping volley at the back post, but his effort flew wide of the left-hand post.

Marney then tried his luck again, this time from 25 yards but his right-footed strike flew just over the crossbar.

Herita Ilunga had a clear chance to put his side ahead on the half-hour mark when Matthew Etheringon picked him out in space from a corner, but the Hammers full-back could only glance his header well wide.

The home side took the lead on 51 minutes when Turner rose to thump in a Andy Dawson corner from six yards out with a pin-point header.

Gianfranco Zola's men nearly equalised within seconds when Valon Behrami played a neat ball into the feet of Cole who managed to turn his man and fire in a right-footed shot from close range, but the ball slammed against the crossbar allowing the Hull defence to clear.

Kamil Zayatte then tried his luck from distance for the Tigers but his 25-yard effort whistled just over Green's crossbar.

Phil Brown's men continued to battle and closed out all West Ham could throw at them to complete a well-earned win.
