Everton without Andy Johnson, Stephen Pienaar and Joseph Yobo as they look to get their challenge for fourth place back on track following last week's defeat to Fulham, West Ham line up with a 4-3-3 formation with Dean Ashton leading the attack

Match Report

Everton must recover from the 1-0 defeat they suffered at lowly Fulham last weekend as they take on a resurgent West Ham side.

Having been beaten 4-0 for three games running, the Hammers came from behind to win 2-1 against Blackburn on Saturday thanks to a late goal by academy graduate Freddie Sears.

Less than 24 hours later Everton had slipped up in their chase of city rivals Liverpool, but club captain Phil Neville insists that it isn't the end of the race yet.

"Whether you're going for the league or the Champions League, teams will drop points and it's how you compose yourselves when you drop those points and how you bounce back that's the true measure," Neville told the Liverpool Echo.

"There's still a lot of football to go and the good thing is that we now have a week off without a game and we can bounce back."

To make matters worse, Everton's injury list was extended in that defeat as Andy Johnson went off after 15 minutes with a groin strain. He will face a fitness test before the squad to face West Ham is selected.

Tim Cahill and Manuel Fernandes remain injury worries for Toffees boss David Moyes, though both will fight to prove their fitness for the weekend.

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley would happily swap that injury list for his own, which now contains around ten key players.

Matthew Etherington, Lee Bowyer, Matthew Upson and Julien Faubert are all doubts going into this weekend, with defender Upson in particular likely to be back if he proves his fitness.

Danny Gabbidon, Craig Bellamy and Nigel Quashie are the only others likely to return before the end of the season but none should play before the end of March at the earliest.

Yet Curbishley was delighted with the way his young back-up players filled in last weekend, describing the squad as a "healthy mixture" of youth and experience.

Midfielder Freddie Ljungberg has at least confirmed that he will recover from the calf injury that saw him replaced against Blackburn, explaining that it was cramp more than anything.

"It feels really good now," Ljungberg told Expressen. He should continue in what could be an unchanged midfield, unless Etherington or Bowyer recover or Sears is handed a starting place after his impressive cameo last week.
