Match Preview

Odemwingie doubt for Baggies West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie is battling to overcome a foot problem in time for Sunday's derby clash with Wolves at the Hawthorns. Simon Cox and Somen Tchoyi are in contention to replace Odemwingie, last season's top scorer with 15 goals, if he is ruled out. Summer signing Billy Jones is in line to make his first Barclays Premier League start at right-back should Steven Reid fail to recover from his fractured hand. Boss Roy Hodgson has challenged his players to make amends for a "totally disappointing" performance in their last Black Country derby. Hodgson performed a minor miracle in helping to keep the Baggies in the top flight with 20 points from their final 12 games. But one of their two defeats was via a dismal 3-1 setback against Wolves at Molineux - a result which went a significant way to ensuring Mick McCarthy's side stayed up as well. Albion have also struggled to repeat last season's form during the current campaign and only remain out of the bottom three on goal difference. But Hodgson said: "The players performed excellently for most of the time after I came into the club but we were poor that day at Molineux. "There haven't been many games where we have put in a performance which was totally disappointing or we've found hard to accept or come to terms with. "The one at Molineux would certainly be a good example and there have been a couple recently where we could have done better. "The players would be the first to tell you the game at Molineux was far from what we should have been doing. "That's part of the battle in some ways because at least, when people know, then you have at least got a chance to put it right and, as a coach, it means you are often preaching to the converted." Hoddgson is aware of the increased importance of the game. He said: "I've got a feel for the rivalry. It is fierce and, for both teams, it's a big game because we are both at the wrong end of the table. "They started like a house on fire but have since had major setbacks. We started with three defeats but have since taken five points from four games. "It's two teams who need a result and two teams who will be going hell for leather to get that result. I don't think either team will let their fans down. "It's our second season in the Premier League, their third, and is vitally important for both clubs to stop in this division. "We believe we have the wherewithal to win the game. We know how much it will mean to our fans." Wolves striker Steven Fletcher has been ruled out with a calf injury suffered in training. It leaves Kevin Doyle as the only fully fit experienced striker, with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake not match-fit after a two month lay-off following a knee setback. Left-back George Elokobi is also sidelined with an ankle injury as Wolves look to end a run of four successive defeats.

Match Report

Odemwingie makes his point Peter Odemwingie responded to being dropped by scoring the decisive second goal as West Brom gained their first top-flight win over Wolves for 29 years in a pulsating 2-0 victory at The Hawthorns. Odemwingie came off the bench after 72 minutes and four minutes later added to the opening goal from skipper Chris Brunt as Albion moved out of the bottom three, It condemned Wolves to a fifth successive defeat - their worst sequence at the top level since 1984. Baggies head coach Roy Hodgson also celebrated his first managerial win over his Wolves counterpart Mick McCarthy at the sixth attempt. Wolves had more of the play during the opening 45 minutes but the home side looked dangerous on the counter-attack. Shane Long was a constant threat and caused plenty of problems for Wolves skipper Roger Johnson and his fellow defenders. After the break Albion took command with Paul Scharner excelling in midfield and Jerome Thomas impressing on the flank. Wolves were the first to threaten and a cross from Stephen Ward found its way to Jamie O'Hara on the far side of the Albion box but his left-footed shot was blocked by debutant Billy Jones. Baggies keeper Ben Foster turned aside a cross-shot from Adam Hammill after he had skipped past the challenge of Jones. But Albion went ahead through their first meaningful attack via Brunt after eight minutes. Youssouf Mulumbu picked out the run of the over-lapping Jones and he cut the ball back across the area to Brunt who hammered a rising shot past Wayne Hennessey from 12 yards out. Wolves retaliated and came close to equalising five minutes later. Foster blocked Milijas's low drive but the rebound fell to Doyle inside the six yard box only for Albion defender Jonas Olsson to make a superb block tackle. Wolves defender Christophe Berra became the first player to be booked after 26 minutes after a mis-timed challenge on Long. Albion were now looking more menacing on the counter-attack. It needed a fine tackle from Ward to prevent Long doubling their lead after Thomas had sent the ball into the danger area. Long then burst clear down the left flank before squaring the ball for the recalled Paul Scharner but he needed a second touch and curled his shot past the far post. Foster was forced to finger-tip a deflected drive from Berra over the bar. Albion were incensed at the start of the second half when Johnson, Wolves' last defender, appeared to bring down Long only for referee Chris Foy to wave play on. Replays indicated Johnson had made no contact with the ball. McCarthy brought on Sylvan Ebanks-Blake for Milijas after 55 minutes - and he almost made an immediate impact. The striker teed up Hammill whose low drive was finger-tipped by Foster around the far post. Johnson should have equalised after 67 minutes when he outjumped Jones to get on the end of a Doyle centre but he headed wide from close range. Odemwingie entered the action with 18 minutes remaining at the expense of Tchoyi. The Nigeria international quickly made an impact in teeing up Thomas whose low shot was blocked by the feet of Hennessey. Then after 76 minutes Odemwingie doubled Albion's lead with his second goal of the campaign. Mulumbu made a probing run before finding Scharner who back-heeled into the path of Odemwingie. He took one touch before drilling a low shot past Hennessey into the corner of the net. Odemwingie could have made it 3-0 but shot over with only Hennessey to beat. end
