Match Preview
Sunderland may be managerless and without a win in eight league games, but they could still climb out of the relegation zone with victory against rock-bottom West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
Caretaker manager Ricky Sbragia will once again be in charge as the Black Cats hierarchy close in on naming their replacement for Roy Keane.
Sbragia came close to securing what would have been a morale-boosting point at Old Trafford last weekend, but a stoppage-time strike was enough for champions Manchester United to win 1-0 and leave the Wearsiders on the losing side for the 11th time this season.
But despite their current malaise, defender Phil Bardsley claims confidence remains high among the squad and he believes an upturn in fortunes is just around the corner.
"It's a bad run but we'll take a lot out of the United performance and hopefully that next win is around the corner," said the full-back. "If we keep playing like that and keep fighting, we'll climb the table."
Sbragia is likely to recall Kenwyne Jones to the starting line-up after the Trinidad & Tobago striker was the victim of a change in formation to a defensive 4-5-1 system at Old Trafford.
He is likely to partner Djibril Cissie in a two-pronged attack, while a fit-again Teemu Tainio could start following an impressive display off the bench last weekend.
An already goal-shy West Brom side must somehow overcome the loss of Ishmael Miller for the rest of the season.
The 21-year-old striker had been a regular starter in recent weeks but now faces nine months on the sidelines after damaging the cruciate ligament in his knee during last Sunday's 1-1 draw with Portsmouth.
Even with Miller in their ranks, the Baggies are among the lowest scorers in the league and manager Tony Mowbray must muddle on until the transfer window opens with only two recognised first-team strikers in Roman Bednar and Luke Moore.
This lack of goals coupled with an inability to keep a clean sheet - the Baggies have conceded in all but three of their games this season - is the main reason why they are one point adrift at the foot of the table.

Match Report
Managerless Sunderland turned in a four-star display to see off West Bromwich Albion at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats are still looking for a new boss after Roy Keane's exit but there was no sign of a team in crisis as the hosts cruised to a 4-0 victory against Tony Mowbray's men.
It was the early Christmas present the home fans wanted as the red and whites delivered a goal-laden victory.
Sunderland had been criticised for an ultra defensive display at Old Trafford the previous week, but there was no sign of any rearguard action against Albion as the hosts kicked off on the offensive.
A quick-fire brace from Kenwyne Jones set the Wearsiders on their way to three precious points.
The Trinidad & Tobago frontman was in sparkling form as he put the Baggies to the sword.
A rather drab opening spell from both sides sparked to life on 22 minutes as Jones met Andy Reid's cross with a diving header to put his side in front.
Just under a minute later the hosts were two goals to the good. Steed Malbranque threaded through a pass to Djibril Cisse and the forward fired at goal.
Baggies keeper Scott Carson made a good save, but the ball came back out to Cisse and this time the striker opted to cross. His ball was met by Reid who poked a shot goalwards.
Carson again did well to block but the rebound fell invitingly to Jones and he coolly slotted the ball home.
The shell-shocked visitors were still reeling as the Wearsiders piled on the misery.
With half-time approaching Sunderland went three up as Malbranque's 39th minute cross was headed in by Reid.
The goalfest continued after the break as Sunderland were awarded a penalty.
Albion substitute Roman Bednar's first contribution was to handle in the box and referee Lee Mason had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Up stepped Cisse to drill a shot down the centre of goal, Carson having dived to his right.
After that the Black Cats eased up and the visitors threatened to reduce the arrears.
However for all their possession that threat never materialised, with Albion restricted to long-range efforts which never really troubled Marton Fulop in the home goal.
The search continues for the Wearsiders' new boss, but whoever it is can rest assured that on this display the club is safe in the hands of stand-in manager Ricky Sbragia for now.
