Match Preview

The boos which rang around Eastlands last Sunday following Manchester City's defeat to Fulham could reach deafening proportions should Mark Hughes' side fail to overcome West Bromwich Albion.

Hughes himself came under fire after City were comfortably beaten 3-1 last weekend and anything less than three points against the league's bottom club is likely to be greeted with anger among an already disgruntled set of supporters.

City's sixth home league defeat of an inconsistent season left them 11th in the table and unlikely to qualify for next term's UEFA Europa League.

That will make it harder for Hughes - or any potential replacement - to lure the sort of talent to the club that City's Middle Eastern owners are keen to sign during the summer transfer window.

Hughes' main problem in recent weeks has been two-fold with a lack of goals being coupled with a shaky defence.

Robinho has looked out of sorts and been left on the bench, while Craig Bellamy (knee), Shaun Wright-Phillips (ankle) and Benjani (thigh) have been absent.

Wright-Phillips is likely to return to inject some impetus to a struggling attack, while left-back Wayne Bridge and defensive midfielder Vincent Kompany have both shrugged off knocks.

Meanwhile, West Brom manager Tony Mowbray is refusing to throw in the towel despite Premier League survival now beginning to look like a pipe dream.

Although last weekend's 2-2 draw with Portsmouth brought a welcome point, other results meant the Baggies are now seven adrift of safety with just six games remaining in the season.

Anything other than three points at Eastlands will nudge them closer to an immediate return to the Championship, but Mowbray is refusing to give up hope until it is mathematically impossible to stay up.

He said: "We need to win at Manchester City and get on with it. The fans deserve a team that is playing for them right until the death and I think they're getting that."

Mowbray will no doubt use his side's 2-1 victory over City at The Hawthorns as motivation.

Match Report

Manchester City were made to work hard for their 4-2 win over a battling West Brom side at Eastlands, as they kept alive their faint hopes of qualification for next season's Europa League.

Mark Hughes kept a largely unchanged side from the one that faced Hamburg in midweek, resting only Micah Richards to bring in Nigel De Jong, who was cup-tied in midweek with Pablo Zabaleta returning to right-back.

West Brom were aggressive from the start, carving out plenty of chances to score by an sleepy City defence, including a flurry of early chances in which the luckless Abdoulaye Meite contrived to miss from five yards out with only Shay Given to beat.

The Baggies' defensive record hasn't been the greatest this season though and Robinho notched up his first City goal of 2009 with a sweetly struck volley from Stephen Ireland's cross in the eighth minute.

Nedum Onuoha made it 2-0 after just 20 minutes when he pounced on a poor headed clearance by Meite to nod home. Scott Carson, the West Brom keeper, was booked for vociferously protesting about the goal to the referee.

It might have looked comfortable for the home side, but it wasn't long before Albion finally began to convert some of the chances that came their way.

City were thankful for Felipe Caicedo's goal-line intervention to deny Robert Koren's effort following Given's shaky clearance after 32 minutes, before Tony Mowbray's men started to get some reward for their hard work.

Chris Brunt's 38th minute daisy cutter beat Given after Marc-Antoine Fortune's lay-off found the Baggies winger in acres of space.

Brunt levelled the scores after half-time after Fortune was brought down 25 yards out from goal. His sweetly struck 54th minute free-kick curled past everyone in the area to beat Given, who saw it late and got nowhere near it.

The pressure was on, but City immediately replied after Elano earned a penalty right from the restart. Jonas Olsson hauled the Brazilian down in the area and Elano stepped up to send Carson the wrong way.

With City finally feeling the after-effects of the Hamburg match late on, West Brom attacked continually in the closing stages of the match and City found themselves hanging on with just ten men after Zabaleta hobbled off shortly before full-time with all substitutes used up.

However, super-sub Daniel Sturridge popped up to finish off the visitors deep into injury time.
