Match Preview

Hornets duo set for debuts Watford manager Malky Mackay may hand first starts to striker Troy Deeney and midfielder Jordon Mutch when Notts County travel to Vicarage Road. Deeney has been restricted to a place on the bench since his #500,000 move from Walsall earlier this month and on-loan Birmingham midfielder Mutch has also yet to be handed his full debut. But both impressed from the bench during Saturday`s 0-0 draw at Hull and could be unleashed from kick-off. Mackay named a strong side during the opening Carling Cup round win at Aldershot and is expected to follow suit against the Magpies. Josh Walker could also be given a chance to impress following his move from Middlesbrough as back-up goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin remains the only injured player for the Hornets. Boss Craig Short must decide whether to stick with the defence that kept a clean sheet against Dagenham. If he does, it means full-back Jon Harley will face his former club. Liam Chilvers, Stephen Hunt and Krystian Pearce are options should Short feel the need for change. Short has no new problems following the 1-0 home win on Saturday, just a few players nursing minor niggles. Last season`s top goalscorer Lee Hughes will miss the second round tie and is likely to miss the league game at Bournemouth at the weekend as he continues to struggle with a groin injury. Fellow forward Luke Rodgers (ankle) and goalkeeper Rob Burch (toe) are making good progress in their recovery from injury but remain three or four weeks away from a return.

Match Report

County upset Hornets Strikes from Ben Davies and Kevin Smith gave Notts County a surprise 2-1 victory over npower Championship side Watford in the second round of the Carling Cup. The League One side were thoroughly outclassed in the first half but Davies' 30-yard screamer followed by Smith's header sent Notts County into the third round for the first time in four years. Debutant Troy Deeney ensured a nervy finale with his 78th-minute goal, however, County held on. The Championship side flew out of the traps and only the post denied Stephen McGinn from breaking the deadlock with a header in the fourth minute. Magpies keeper Stuart Nelson had to be at his best to deny long-range efforts from Will Buckley and Marvin Sordell as Watford looked to be in the ascendancy. Sordell spurned a gilt-edged chance to put the Hornets in front after 19 minutes when he dallied in putting the ball into an empty net after rounding Nelson and was superbly tackled by John Thompson. Following a lull in action, McGinn forced another fine save from Stuart Nelson on the stroke of half-time. The hosts were made to pay for their failure to convert one of their several first-half chances when Notts County opened the scoring just seconds after the interval. After Deeney had fouled Smith, Davies' superb 30-yard free-kick whistled into the bottom corner of the net to leave the home fans stunned. Galvanised by the goal, Craig Short's men were no longer on the back-foot and though Nelson again denied Sordell, Smith doubled his side's lead in the 67th minute. Shortly after coming off the bench, Craig Westcarr's chip into the box was headed in by the County striker. However, Deeney halved the deficit with a goal on his debut 12 minutes from time when he headed in from Danny Graham's cross. Graham missed the target from close range and Sordell was again foiled by Nelson as Notts County held on for the win.
