Didier Drogba blasted a supreme hat-trick as lowly Watford were dismantled, chewed up and spat out by reigning Premiership champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Aided by Andriy Shevchenko, who scored to celebrate the birth of his new child, Chelsea humbled the Hornets and ran out comfortable 4-0 winners. It was Chelsea who started the more confident, and Drogba burst into action on five minutes. Receiving a deep crossfield ball by Ashley Cole on his chest, the Ivorian rushed into the Watford penalty area. But, unluckily for him, Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster was able to clear the striker's shot for a corner. A thumping clearance from Carlo Cudicini, six minutes later, saw the ball sail over the Watford defence. Drogba raced behind the defence but Foster was quick to spot the danger and raced out of area to clear. Watford offered very little by way of attacking aspirations in the opening quarter of an hour, however, their defence was solid. Chelsea finally broke the deadlock on 26 minutes when centre-back Ricardo Carvalho raced forward and fed the ball wide to Geremi. The full-back drove a low, curling ball across Watford's six-yard line. Shevchenko tried to latch onto the ball but failed. The ball fell invitingly to Drogba, who stretched out his left leg to fend the ball into the left-hand corner of Foster's goal. It was Drogba's 12th goal of the season. Nine minutes later and it was number two for the champions. This time Michael Ballack caused the problems before feeding the ball to Shevchenko who smartly passed the ball on to Drogba. The on-fire hitman raced into the Watford area and, without breaking stride, hit a low drive across the body of Foster and into the far corner of the net. Watford's first chance of the game came on 41 minutes, when Cudicini was forced to make a smart save from a Danny Shittu right-footer. But the goalkeeper's outstretched legs prevented a goal. Chelsea almost extended their lead three minutes into the second half, but Ballack's chip from the edge of the Watford penalty area went over the goalkeeper's hands but fell agonisingly wide of goal. Chelsea hit number three on 52 minutes. Cudicini launched a long goal kick and Drogba collected the ball on his chest before deftly chipping the ball into the path of Shevchenko. The Ukrainian chested the ball down, before taking it past Foster and stroking the ball into an empty net. Four minutes later Shevchenko sent Frank Lampard free, but the England midfielder's left-foot shot was deflected for a corner. Shevchenko had the ball in the back of the net 60 seconds later but was adjudged offside. He was replaced on 64 minutes by Arjen Robben. Robben passed to Geremi on 69 minutes, who as for the first goal, arrowed a precision right-footer across Watford's goal. Drogba popped up unmarked and tucked home his hat-trick and Chelsea's fourth.
