Match Preview

Saddlers hoping for double boost Walsall boss Dean Smith hopes to have Jon Macken and Emmanuel Ledesma available to face Southampton at the Banks's Stadium. Striker Macken missed Saturday's 0-0 draw against Rochdale with a back spasm but should be fit to return. Argentine attacking midfielder Ledesma joined the club last week as a free agent on a deal until the end of the season but is still waiting for international clearance to be granted. Veteran forward Darren Byfield made his return after more than five months out with a knee injury against Dale, coming on as a 75th-minute substitute and he is expected to start on the bench again. Cypriot midfielder Tom Williams made his first appearance for the club against Dale, playing the full 90 minutes, and after impressing he is expected to keep his place. Southampton will hand Guly do Prado a late fitness test. The Brazilian frontman had to be substituted an hour into Saturday's 4-1 win over Swindon after picking up a knock. Lee Barnard replaced Guly and scored Saints' fourth goal to push his claims for a return to the starting line-up. Defender Dan Seabourne and forwards Jonathan Forte and David Connolly sat out at the weekend with minor niggles and could feature but full-back Ryan Dickson remains doubtful with a neck injury. Winger Lee Holmes is recovering from an ankle operation, and back-up goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski has a knee injury which may require surgery meaning Arsenal loanee James Shea will be on the bench again.

Match Report

Saddlers shock Saints Promotion-chasing Southampton crashed to their first defeat in six games as relegation-threatened Walsall pulled off a shock 1-0 win. Veteran striker Jon Macken, back in the Saddlers' attack after injury, burst onto a long through ball from Aaron Lescott in the 69th minute to chip Saints' keeper Kelvin Davis for his fifth goal of the season. Southampton had dominated the first half with their quick passing and slick movement but could not beat Walsall's long-serving keeper James Walker, who pulled off a string of fine saves. As early as the second minute Walker denied Morgan Schneiderlin who looked certain to score and was injured in the process, having to be replaced by Dany N'Guessan in the seventh minute. Walker then saved from Lee Barnard twice and in the 23rd minute he saved again from Adam Lallana. Walsall were restricted to quick breaks and after Julian Gray had shot inches wide in the 57th minute, Macken grabbed what proved to be the winner on 69 minutes. Southampton threw everything at the home defence in an effort to save a point but Walsall skipper Andy Butler cleared off the line from Barnard with 10 minutes left, and the Saddlers hung on for a precious win.
