Match Preview

Chambers sidelined for Saddlers Adam Chambers will not return in time for Walsall's home clash against Sheffield United. The midfielder has missed the Saddlers' last two matches with a heel injury and, despite making progress in his recovery, will have to watch from the stands again. That means Anton Peterlin is set to keep his place in the middle of the park having stepped in to replace Chambers for the stalemate at Preston and Saturday's valuable late 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient. Otherwise, manager Dean Smith has no new injury worries as Walsall return to home soil after three matches on the road which have yielded five points. Walsall coach Richard O'Kelly will not take his place in the dugout having been appointed as the new manager of League Two Hereford on Monday. Sheffield United manager Danny Wilson faces a defensive crisis with up to five players ruled out through injury or suspension. Defenders Matt Lowton and Harry Maguire were both sent off in Saturday's 3-2 home defeat to Oldham and serve one-match bans, while Lecsinel Jean-Francois was stretchered off towards the end of the first half with a knee injury. Left-back Marcus Williams is continuing his recovery from a back injury and centre-half Neill Collins missed out against Oldham due to "personal matters". Andy Taylor looks set to continue in the back four after making his first appearance in over 14 months at the weekend following cruciate knee ligament damage, although Collins could return to contention. Johnny Ertl is likely to return to the starting line-up and there could be a debut for 23-year-old Irishman Seamus Conneely. Despite Saturday's defeat, the Blades remain five points clear of third-placed Sheffield Wednesday in the race for automatic promotion.

Match Report

Saddlers blunt Blades Walsall beat Sheffield United 3-2 to record back-to-back league victories for the first time this season and climb out of the npower League One relegation zone. Midfielder Sam Mantom, signed hours earlier on loan from West Brom, put the Saddlers in front with a great first time shot into the top corner after 55 minutes. The lead lasted just 10 minutes, though, as Lee Williamson latched on to a Ched Evans pass to equalise. Jon Macken's cross-shot restored the home side's lead after 73 minutes. It was the veteran striker's seventh goal of the season. But once again the lead was shortlived as Evans darted through to level things up three minutes later. However, Walsall, unbeaten in five matches, grabbed an 81st-minute winner when substitute Alex Nicholls headed in Mat Sadler's far-post cross. Defences had been well on top in a tight first half and there was nothing to suggest such a thrilling second half.
