Match Preview

Same again for Saddlers Chris Hutchings has the same squad at his disposal as Walsall finally look set to get back to action with the visit of Notts County. The Saddlers have managed just one game in five weeks - while their last home fixture came back on November 20 - due to the freezing December temperatures. But the forecast looks good for the New Year`s Day clash against Paul Ince`s side and Hutchings will hope to see his charges build on their impressive 1-0 triumph at Charlton, although the Valley victory now seems a long time ago. Goalkeeper Jimmy Walker is still out with a hamstring problem but could return for next Saturday`s trip to Tranmere, while striker Darren Byfield continues to aim for a January return from his long-term knee injury. Strike duo Jon Macken and Reuben Reid are again available having some time ago recovered from their calf and hamstring niggles, while being unable to take to the pitch. Notts County have no new problems ahead of the trip to Walsall. Ricky Ravenhill returned from the facial injuries he sustained during the FA Cup win against Bournemouth as an unused substitute at Plymouth on Tuesday. He could forced his way into the starting line-up. Fellow midfielder Thomas Ince, defenders John Thompson and Graeme Lee and forwards Michael Woods and Karl Hawley provide further options for boss Paul Ince. Liam Chilvers remains the only injury absentee as he recovers medial knee ligament damage. It was feared the defender would be sidelined for at least two months but he now believes he will be back in contention before the end of January.

Match Report

County pile misery on sorry Saddlers Notts County added to the relegation fears of woeful Walsall with an easy 3-0 win at the Banks's Stadium, extending their own unbeaten run to five games. It took County only nine minutes to open up the suspect Walsall defence, Craig Westcarr running on to a pass from Mike Edwards, beating the offside trap and Walsall keeper Jonny Brain allowed his fierce shot to escape his grasp and sail into the net. And after 16 minutes the visitors extended their lead, Lee Miller being allowed a free header from a deep cross by the lively Alan Judge. Walsall tried to hit back and Steve Jones saw his shot after 25 minutes deflected for a corner by Magpies' keeper Rob Burch, who then smothered a low drive from Julian Gray. But in the second half County were in virtual total control, adding a third goal in the 56th minute when central defender Krystian Pearce was given space at the near post to head in a corner from former Walsall trainee Ben Davies.
