Match Preview

Few worries for Saddlers Walsall have an almost fully-fit squad for the visit of Leyton Orient on the opening day of the season. Midfielder Jake Jones (ankle) is the only absentee but, with the youngster unlikely to start, manager Dean Smith will still be able to field his first-choice XI at the Banks`s Stadium. That means summer signings David Grof, Lee Beevers, Mat Sadler, Anton Peterlin, Claude Gnakpa, Kevan Hurst, Ryan Jarvis and Adam Chambers will all be competing to start. It will be an early reunion with Orient for former O`s striker Jarvis and midfielder Chambers, the latter of whom is the London club`s longest-serving player with almost 200 appearances before he switched to the Saddlers. The encounter also sees Smith come up against his former employers having played for and been both youth-team coach and assistant manager at Orient. Leyton Orient look set to be without their skipper Stephen Dawson. The influential midfielder has an ankle injury and is rated extremely doubtful for the opening game of the season. New striker David Mooney tweaked a hamstring in a friendly against Tottenham last weekend will need a late fitness check. Boss Russell Slade is also without goalkeeper Jamie Jones, who has missed all of pre-season with a shoulder problem, so deputy Lee Butcher will don the gloves. Summer signing Jamie Cureton should start in attack after shaking off a recent ankle injury. Fellow new recruits Scott Cuthbert, Leon McSweeney and Marc Laird are also in line to make their Orient debuts.

Match Report

Chambers wraps up Saddlers win Adam Chambers showed his former employers what they are missing as his 30-yard scorcher gave Walsall a 1-0 win. The midfielder, who was making his debut for the Saddlers after being released from Orient in the summer, superbly powered in from distance to stick the knife in Russell Slade and his side, who could not muster a response. The Saddlers only just survived last term but they hit the ground running with Chambers beating Lee Butcher after 20 minutes. Ben Chorley could have got the visitors on level terms soon after but he could not direct his header from a Charlie Daniels' corner while Jon Macken spurned a good chance to extend the Saddlers' lead when he fired over. Orient came out strongly after the break in search of a leveller and Walsall keeper Jimmy Smith was twice called into action to negate Dean Cox and Jimmy Smith headers. Veteran striker Jamie Cureton spurned two good opportunities as Orient piled on the pressure, but Walsall held on.
