Match Preview

Four-some news for Walsall Walsall could be boosted by as many as four fresh faces for their crucial home clash against Exeter. Winger Martin Devaney and centre-back Andrew Davies have this week arrived on loan from Barnsley and Stoke respectively and are likely to make their debuts at the Banks`s Stadium. Wide man Steve Jones is expected to come back into the reckoning after seven weeks out with an ankle injury while striker and skipper Darren Byfield also has an outside chance of making his return from a knee problem. The news will provide a much-needed shot in the arm for under pressure manager Chris Hutchings and his confidence-sapped squad who have slumped to the foot of the table courtesy of a seven-match winless streak in the league, which has included six defeats. The only absentee is now midfielder Richard Taundry (knee) who is expected to rejoin his team-mates for full training next week. Exeter manager Paul Tisdale has no fresh selection concerns for the trip. John O'Flynn and Daniel Nardiello started Tuesday's 3-0 Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory at Hereford after injury lay-offs and were both on the scoresheet, which gives Tisdale a welcome selection poser in attack. Jamie Cureton and Richard Logan have been leading the Grecians' line in recent matches and Tisdale must decide whether to stick with those two in attack or hand a start to O'Flynn or Nardiello. Club captain Matt Taylor is still some way away from fitness after a debilitating back injury which has kept him out since the first week of the season. The Grecians are enjoying an impressive start to the campaign and have been beaten just once in their last seven League Two outings.

Match Report

Saddlers make it ninth time lucky Walsall scraped a narrow 2-1 win over 10-man Exeter to clinch their first victory in nine attempts and ease their worries at the bottom of League One. The Saddlers were two goals ahead and coasting when Exeter centre-back Troy Archibald-Henville was sent off for a second bookable offence a minute from half-time. But Exeter, now beaten only three times in 11 league games, fought back splendidly in the second-half, pulled a goal back through top scorer Ryan Harley in the 53rd minute and were a shade unlucky not to salvage a point. With five loan signings in their line-up including impressive debutants Martin Devaney and Andrew Davies, Walsall were looking for only their third win of the season. And they took the lead in the 32nd minute when a defensive mistake by Exeter's David Noble let in Jon Macken whose low cross was driven home by Reuben Reid for his fourth goal since joining on loan from West Brom. It looked all over when Matt Richards headed Walsall's second from a cross by Devaney, and the dismissal of Archibald-Henville should have made the home team's task easy. But Harley bagged his eighth of the season for Exeter to start a brave fightback by the visitors and in stoppage time substitute John O'Flynn was unlucky to see his volley skim the bar.
