Nilmar looks beyond quarter-finals
Striker Nilmar believes Villarreal now boast a squad that can earn the Yellow Submarine their first major trophy, with this season's Europa League firmly in their sights.
Villarreal have only been playing top-flight football in Spain since 1998 and are yet to get their hands on any notable silverware, but with the talent at their disposal is seems only a matter of time before that is statistic is remedied.
Nilmar and Giuseppe Rossi are a formidable threat up front, while they are ably backed up by a host of Spain internationals, including World Cup winners Joan Capdevila and Carlos Marchena, plus the likes of talented midfielders Borja Valero and Cani.
It is a team that should be challenging for honours, and although Juan Carlos Garrido's side are out of contention in La Liga and the Copa del Rey, they are still well in the hunt for Europa League glory, with a quarter-final first leg against in-form FC Twente on Thursday.
Brazil international Nilmar said: "We are going into the quarter-finals with high hopes of getting through because there are only five games to go to win a title.
"We have the right players to win Villarreal's first title. If we achieve that and also get into the Champions League it would be a spectacular season for us."
Coach Garrido added: "Villarreal have the right maturity to win titles. The eight teams that are still in have a possibility to win the Europa League.
"We know that winning it is very difficult, but we will give it everything and aim for the title. This club can do it and we want to do it."
Standing in Villarreal's way in the quarter-finals are an FC Twente side who have won six of their last seven competitive matches, with their only defeat coming against Zenit St Petersburg in their last Europa League outing - that after the Dutch side had been leading 3-0 from the first leg.
Garrido said: "We are facing a great team. We have a lot of respect for Twente because they are the leaders of the Dutch league and are good in attack. I think the tie is at 50-50 and I'm sure that it will be decided in the second leg."
Michel Preud'homme's side make the trip to El Madrigal in buoyant mood after moving two points clear at the top of the Eredivisie after beating erstwhile pacesetters PSV Eindhoven 2-0, Theo Janssen scoring both goals.
Twente centre-back Douglas said on www.uefa.com : "Villarreal have very good players. They're almost all internationals, with a few exceptions. But we also have quality. I've seen Villarreal a couple of times and they play the same style as Barcelona.
"Their two strikers Rossi and Nilmar are especially dangerous and we'll have to watch them closely. We try to play football and we're not afraid of anyone. Villarreal are the favourites, though."
The winners of this tie will meet either Porto or Spartak Moscow in the semi-finals.
Yellow Submarine torpedo for Twente
Villarreal made it a memorable week for Spanish clubs in Europe after they took a giant step towards the semi-finals of the Europa League with a crushing 5-1 win over FC Twente at El Madrigal.
Following on from similarly big victories by Real Madrid and Barcelona in the Champions League, Villarreal stunned the Dutch league leaders with goals from Nilmar (two), Carlos Marchena, Borja Valero and Giuseppe Rossi.
Twente pulled a late goal back through Marc Janko to give them a glimmer of hope for the second leg but Villarreal remain overwhelming favourites to progress.
There was little sign of what was to come as the first 22 minutes of the match passed with little incident.
However, after a slow start, Villarreal took the lead with their first real opportunity through Spanish World Cup winner Marchena, and they never looked back after that.
The deadlock was broken when Valero's corner was flicked on at the near post by Jose Manuel Catala and Marchena, standing unmarked three yards out, had the simple task of heading into an empty net.
That goal sparked Villarreal into life and they had a great chance to make it 2-0 in the 34th minute when Nilmar got in behind the FC Twente defence, but the Brazilian's chip over goalkeeper Nikolay Mihailov came back off the near post.
Villarreal did double their lead in the 43rd minute, though, when Valero latched onto a through-ball from Santi Cazorla and coolly slotted a low shot past Mihailov.
It was to get even better for the home side before the break as they added a third goal through Nilmar following a poor defensive header from Peter Wisgerhof.
Wisgerhof attempted to clear a Villarreal throw but his header went up into the air before falling perfectly for Nilmar to nod past Mihailov.
That was an awful way for shellshocked Twente to end the half, but they had an opportunity to pull a goal back at the start of the second half after Theo Janssen picked out Bryan Ruiz's unchecked run into the box.
However, Ruiz was unable to take advantage as he headed wide while the Villarreal defence appealed in vain for offside.
The Yellow Submarine were far from impressed the flag had not gone up, but they were much happier moments later as Rossi made it 4-0 with a brilliant finish.
The Twente defence stood off the Italy international as he made his way to the edge of the area and the striker made them pay as he curled an unstoppable shot into the top corner with Mihailov motionless.
That was not the end of Villarreal's scoring either as, after Cazorla had tested Mihailov and Twente substitute Janko had fired over at the far post, the Spaniards made it 5-0 in the 81st minute.
Rossi played the ball into strike partner Nilmar on the edge of the box, and the Brazilian cleverly let the ball run across him to wrong-foot the visiting defence before thumping a shot past Mihailov.
At that stage Twente looked gone, but they gave themselves a slight lifeline in injury time when Janko headed in following good work by Wisgerhof, although Michel Preud'homme's side still have a massive task if they are to go through.
