Havos at helm for PAOK
PAOK go into the tough Europa League showdown with Villarreal sitting atop Group D but with a new man at the helm following this weekend's departure of coach Pavlos Dermitzakis.
Dermitzakis had helped PAOK pick up four points from their opening two Europa League games, leaving them a point clear of Dinamo Zagreb and Villarreal in the table, but the club's domestic form has not been so good.
Saturday's defeat by Panathinaikos was their third successive 1-0 reverse and means PAOK are now stuck in the bottom three of the Greek top flight with five points from six games.
It was after that game that PAOK and Dermitzakis mutually decided to go their separate ways, with the coach saying on www.uefa.com: "We did well in Europe, but the bad results in the league are the reason behind this development.
"I told the players that the talent and quality are still there and they can turn the situation around."
Makis Havos, who was Dermitzakis's assistant, has been handed caretaker duties for the trip to Villarreal and he faces a baptism of fire against the in-form Spanish team.
Villarreal had a sluggish start to the season, but since losing to Dinamo Zagreb in their opening Europa League match the Yellow Submarine rattled off five successive wins prior to Monday night's 2-2 draw at Hercules.
Juan Carlos Garrido's side would have moved to the top of the Primera Division standings if they had won that game, but as it is they are second on 16 points, one behind pacesetters Real Madrid.
During their winning streak Villarreal downed Club Brugge to get their Europa League challenge back on track, but defender Mateo Musacchio knows they need another victory at El Madrigal.
"For us it's a vital game and we cannot allow the three points to escape, especially as we are playing at home. If we play at our level I'm sure that we will take the three points," said the 20-year-old, who was one of three players shown a red card in the entertaining clash with Hercules.
Defender Angel Lopez added: "Our loss in Croatia (to Dinamo) means we are obliged to win our home games and, as well as that, it would be very important for morale because if we pick up points we will go away from home much calmer."
Ruben settles it for top dogs Villarreal
Marco Ruben's first-half goal proved decisive at El Madrigal as Villarreal moved top of Europa League Group D with a 1-0 victory over PAOK Salonika.
The Argentinian striker broke the deadlock seven minutes before the break to secure the Spanish side their second straight win in the group and end their Greek rivals' unbeaten start.
With the evening's other game in this group ending goalless between Dinamo Zagreb and Club Brugge, Villarreal climbed atop the pool by two points.
The Yellow Submarine had the better of the early exchanges but struggled to break down a stubborn PAOK defence.
Ruben got himself into a good position just before the half-hour but saw his left-footed effort from close range blocked by PAOK defender Bruno Cirillo.
The breakthrough arrived in the 38th minute, when Ruben fired into the bottom-left corner from the right side of the penalty area from Giuseppe Rossi's pass.
PAOK, who parted company with coach Pavlos Dermitzakis last weekend due to poor domestic form, almost hit back immediately when Zlatan Muslimovic met Giorgos Fotakis' inswinging corner, but he sent his far-post header wide.
There was still time for Juan Carlos Garrido's side to pass up an opportunity to extend their advantage before the half-time whistle, Rossi lashing wide from 12 yards two minutes before the break.
The hosts continued to boss the encounter in the second half but could not add to their lead.
Rossi tried his luck from long range but could only direct his effort wide, while at the other end Giorgos Fotakis let fly from distance but failed to trouble Diego Lopez.
PAOK needed Cirillo to get his body in the way to block Cani's blast midway through the second half to keep the deficit at 1-0, but they were offering little as an attacking force.
Vladimir Ivic's volley flew over the bar in the 71st minute and Nabil El Zhar's attempt three minutes later went the same way as the visitors tried in vain to get back on level terms.
Cani went close to grabbing a second goal two minutes from time with a left-footed shot from 12 yards, but PAOK goalkeeper Dario Kresic got down to tip it around the post.
Nilmar also fired wide and substitute Jozy Altidore was denied by Kresic in stoppage time, but the second goal was not forthcoming.
"Are Chelsea right to bring back Jose Mourinho?"
