Match Preview
Rolfes confident ahead of Villarreal test Bayer Leverkusen captain Simon Rolfes has backed his side to win at Villarreal on Thursday night and progress to the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Leverkusen went down 3-2 in the first leg last week, substitute Nilmar scoring twice, including a last-minute winner. That put them in pole position to make it into the last eight, but Rolfes said his side were taking heart from their 1-0 win at Mainz at the weekend. "It was good that three days later we had to get out on the pitch again and we could win. That certainly does our psyche a power of good," Rolfes told the club's official website. The win over Mainz moved second-placed Leverkusen to within nine points of leaders Borussia Dortmund. "We are accustomed to being under pressure, even in the Bundesliga we have to win games," added Rolfes. "We have shown we are very strong straight away, so why should we not win in Villarreal as well?" Villarreal were brought back down to earth following their success in the first leg as they were held 1-1 at home by nine-man Sporting Gijon in La Liga at the weekend - leaving the Yellow Submarine with just one win in their last seven league games. Juan Carlos Garrido's side were undone by a Sporting penalty equaliser deep into stoppage-time at the end of that game, but it is the start of Thursday's clash against Leverkusen to which Villarreal defender Gonzalo Rodriguez believes his side need to pay extra caution. The centre-back, who conceded the penalty that allowed lowly Sporting to gain a point, said: "The important thing is that they (Leverkusen) don't score in the opening minutes because that would give them a lot of hope. "We know we have good strikers and while I'm sure they are going to have chances to score, it's most important that Leverkusen don't get any against us. "In the opening minutes they will play a direct style of football because they have very strong players in the air. The Argentinian knows his side need to be switched on for the whole match as well though, not just the start, adding: "When they are knockout ties you can't relax. "Bayer are very strong and we have to be attentive for the whole 90 minutes, although I'm sure they will be worried about our players. "We will try to get the win and make our fans happy." Coach Garrido welcomes back Spain full-back Joan Capdevila, who was suspended for the first leg, but Marcos Senna and Angel Lopez remain injury absentees.

Match Report
Villarreal book last-eight spot Santi Cazorla and Giuseppe Rossi teamed up brilliantly to help Villarreal ease into the Europa League quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen at El Madrigal. Holding a slender lead following their 3-2 win in Germany last week, the Spanish side made sure of their progression thanks to Cazorla's first-half goal and and Rossi's strike after the break against a spirited Leverkusen side who clawed one back through Gonzalo Rodriguez's late own goal. Villarreal goalkeeper Diego Lopez was imperious throughout, though, with the Bundesliga side creating the better chances but failing to capitalise as their hosts moved through. After a tentative opening, Domagoj Vida had a shot from 25 yards but his left-footed effort was easily caught by Lopez. Renato Augusto also had an attempt for the German outfit but failed to test Lopez any more than his team-mate while Eren Derdiyok's free-kick was similarly tame. At the other end Villarreal forced their first opening in the 17th minute as Rossi smashed wide of goal from close range. In the 33rd minute the Yellow Submarine extended their aggregate lead and took the wind out of Leverkusen. The effervescent Cazorla started and finished it, dropping deep to collect the ball before making his way forward, exchanging a neat one-two with Rossi and sweeping the ball home with his right foot. Leverkusen looked to hit back immediately as Renato Augusto shot from inside the box only to be denied by the seemingly invulnerable Lopez. Sidney Sam had another chance for the Bundesliga side before the half was out but fired over the bar from 12 yards. When Carlos Marchena fouled Renato Augusto a minute later, he got up to take the free-kick himself and really tested Lopez for the first time with a powerful shot which the goalkeeper saved brilliantly. Villarreal once again created something from nothing to rubber-stamp the victory on the half-hour mark, Rossi being fed by Cazorla before creating space and rifling home expertly. Villarreal defender Gonzalo clipped Renato Augusto as he charged into the box and was lucky not to concede a penalty, though he was booked for his trouble. He got himself in more bother in the 84th minute, though, when Lopez was finally beaten by his slice into his own net from Stefan Reinartz's cross.
