The Black Stars were Africa's sole survivors in the last 16 and goals from Kevin Prince-Boateng and the impressive Gyan ensured the party at the first World Cup on African soil will continue.
Ghana had not scored from open play throughout their three group games but Boateng ensured that record was broken with just five minutes on the clock in Rustenburg.
The Portsmouth midfielder, who only made his debut for his adopted nation in the build-up to the tournament, squeezed a perfectly-placed left-foot shot from the edge of the box between Tim Howard and his near post to give Ghana the perfect start.
Boateng was a real livewire and he fired straight at Howard from 25 yards as Ghana dominated the first half.
US coach Bob Bradley was clearly unhappy with his players who were standing off the opposition and he sent on Maurice Edu to strengthen his midfield on the half-hour mark.
