Match Report

Tranmere Rovers were made to fight hard by Yeovil Town before eventually clinching their seventh home victory, which took them a step closer to the League One play-off zone.

Yeovil showed plenty of spirit and determination but were on the back foot for most of the game.

They were not helped when midfield Marc Bircham was dismissed in the 71st minute for a second yellow card.

Yeovil had earlier conceded a penalty and it turned out to be an unlucky afternoon for the Glovers as they lost for the sixth time on the road.

Tranmere had the best possible start when they opened the scoring in the fourth minute. Calvin Zola produced an excellent finish from the edge of the box after being set up by Shane Sherriff.

The Merseysiders went on to make most of the first-half running. But a Sherriff header was pushed over by alert keeper Steve Mildenhall and then Jennison Myrie-Williams fired wide after a good run.

Mildenhall produced another fine save to deny Zola after 34 minutes.

Yeovil's only first-half chance fell to Paul Warne, but he headed Zoltan Stieber's cross over.

The visitors rocked Tranmere with a 51st-minute equaliser. Recent signing Andy Kirk produced a good finish from Lloyd Owusu's throughball as the home defence hesitated.

Terry Skiverton mis-kicked from a good chance for Town before Tranmere regained the lead in the 62nd minute.

Zola was tripped by Scott Guyett and Myrie-Williams made no mistake with a low shot into the keeper's right corner. It was the loanee's first goal for Rovers.

Mildenhall made another excellent save to deny Steve Jennings but Yeovil finished strongly with home keeper Danny Coyne having to make an excellent stop from an angled shot by Kirk.

Myrie-Williams was outstanding for the winners and there were also solid performances from Sherriff, Zola and skipper Ian Goodison.

Paul Warne took star billing for the losers.
