Match Preview
Rovers sweating over Showumni Tranmere boss Les Parry is hopeful that striker Enoch Showumni will be passed fit for the season opener at home to Chesterfield. Despite missing the friendly against Liverpool with a shin injury, the forward could be given the green light to feature against the Spireites. Parry said: "It's healing nicely and it's fine. It's just a case of whether he can put up with the discomfort. "He will get discomfort from that type of injury but he won't do himself any further damage." Aaron Cresswell and Dale Jennings have left Prenton Park to join Ipswich and Bayern Munich respectively and a host of other players have been released, but summer signings Owain Fon Williams and Danny Holmes could make their debuts. Long-term injury victim Gregor Robertson is manager John Sheridan's only definite absentee as Chesterfield make their return to League One. Robertson remains unavailable due to an Achilles injury he suffered at Hereford in April. Fellow defender Nathan Smith, a summer signing from Yeovil, and utility man Jamie Lowry missed the final pre-season friendly against Hull last weekend but should be fit. Sheridan, who is still expecting to make signings ahead of the game at Prenton Park, has selection headaches even without any additional arrivals. Tommy Lee will start in goal and Smith at left-back but apart from that there are no certainties. Veteran striker Jack Lester was a rare starter in away matches last season but will probably get the nod. He could be partnered by Dean Morgan, Jordan Bowery or Scott Boden. Drew Talbot could even find himself up front if Sheridan decides against playing him down the right-hand side. Dean Holden could play at right-back or centre-half or could even be overlooked, such is the manager's flexibility.

Match Report
Weir on our way, says Robbie Robbie Weir netted the only goal of the game as Tranmere enjoyed a winning start to their npower League One campaign. The midfielder struck with 16 minutes remaining to ensure Chesterfield left Prenton Park empty-handed on their return to the third tier. It is not the start boss John Sheridan will have hoped for after guiding the Spireites to the League Two title last season. Rovers were impressive from the off as Martin Devaney and John Welsh forced smart saves from Tommy Lee during the opening exchanges. Les Parry's side continued to enjoy the majority of possession and almost went ahead on the stroke of half-time but Adam McGurk's effort flew over the crossbar. Chesterfield were trying to stamp their mark on proceedings but could only watch on as Tranmere got the reward their endeavour deserved in the 74th minute, Weir finding space in the area and slotting home. Going a goal behind did not galvanise Sheridan's men as the hosts held on to secure all three points.
